Attachment-based Counselling in Merchant City, Glasgow
The theoretical approach I use focusses on the dynamics of previous and present relationships, incorporating attachment-based understanding, identification of unmet need from previous relationships and the influence this may have had on the development of current relationships.
My practice involves working with adults, presenting with emotional conflict, dilemma's, pain, indecision, bereavement, physical ill health, eating attachments, past trauma, current relationship difficulties with parents, friends, siblings and with self. My work with people, involves emotional attunement, safety and boundaries of confidentiality, self-harm, suicidal thoughts. The theory I practice from is Psychodynamic, which focusses on conscious, unconscious processes, encouraging self-awareness and an ability to orientate from presenting repeated patterns relating to self, to decisions which are nurturing and fulfilling.

This means that I use a mixture of approaches, and combine approaches from CBT, narrative therapy, and attachment-based approaches.
Are you a parent or carer of a child or young person who has additional support needs, special educational needs or learning disabilities? Are you struggling to understand your child's needs and their behaviours? Would you like to learn more about helpful strategies and approaches that you can use to reduce their behaviours and anxiety, or to enhance your child's mental health and learning? Would your child benefit from help to navigate relationships and school? Would it be helpful for you, too, to talk over your concerns in a safe, and supportive setting?

Emotional, relational and health-related difficulties can often arise from adverse life experiences or trauma. With the support of a psychotherapist you can work towards identifying the source of stress and anxiety, dissociation, depression, addiction, sleeping problems, issues related to eating and many other symptoms. It is by working at depth and carefully tracking what is happening in the body - along with emerging emotions and thoughts - that we can address the 'stuckness' of symptoms.

If you struggle with emotions (anger, resentment, grief, depression or anxiety) and want to work through emotional baggage, I could be the therapist to create a safe space where you can talk openly about what has happened in your life and figure out how to create a fulfilling life. This often involves working through core wounds such as abandonment and neglect, which can be challenging but ultimately reduces emotional suffering. People struggle with various emotions and thoughts, such as anxiety, depression and low self-esteem, and we are usually left overwhelmed with nowhere to go and no one to speak to.

I am an experienced psychotherapist working with people of all ages, to help them towards finding a more fulfilling way of life. My style of working is based on the building up of a trusting and open relationship between us, which is the basis for all our therapeutic work. I believe our experiences as children, whether good or bad, affect us throughout our lives; and by being given the time and space to 'tell our story', we develop more insight into why we are the way we are. These insights then guide us towards finding ways to change what we want to change, and value those qualities in ourselves that are beneficial.

By understanding our thoughts and behaviours we can feel empowered to make positive changes that can lead us to fuller and more enjoyable lives.

Deciding to engage in therapy is a positive and brave decision to embark on a journey of self-discovery. As a qualified therapist (and clincal supervisor) with ten years experience, my role is to create a secure base and be a guide for you, so that you can take up this challenge of self-discovery and move towards greater consciousness, choice and positivity. While working with difficulties in the present many have their origins in emotional experiences and unconscious emotional learning in early life relationships. Also events and consistent experiences, which may amount to degrees of difficulty, pain or trauma.

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
