I am trained in EMDR and Emotionally Focussed Therapy and have supervised family therapy students.
I am Shaheen, a qualified and experienced therapist working with couples, families and individuals, who would like to deal with life or relationship challenges differently. My approach is systemic, which means looking at issues in the context of relationships, experiences, cultures and situations. For couples or families it's useful for recognising unhelpful patterns and enabling you - between you - to find new ways of managing that fit better with how you would like to be. Whatever challenges you are facing, we can explore what the multiple factors are, that may have contributed, and open up space for new ideas.

Alongside talk therapy, I am EMDRIA-certified in EMDR and have also trained extensively in IFS-informed EMDR.
With an emphasis on relational safety, I gently support clients in understanding perceived challenges and limitations through a self-compassionate lens, recognising that everything we do—and have done—once served a purpose in our survival. From this perspective, clients can access new insights and begin to find different, more supportive pathways forward.

I am a qualified CBT Counsellor and predominantly work with clients using a CBT based approach but can also call upon skills and experience I have gained through additional training in clinical hypnotherapy, life coaching and person-centred counselling.

You or your child may be feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, caught in cycles of worry and overthinking, or struggling with relationships that leave you feeling hurt, disconnected, or not quite yourself. Sometimes difficult experiences can continue to affect confidence, emotions, and the way we relate to others long after they have passed. You may find yourself putting others first, doubting yourself, avoiding situations that feel difficult, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. I work with adults, children, and young people who want to feel more secure, understood, and able to move forward with greater confidence.

Many of the people I work with are struggling with questions of faith, identity, and culture, often alongside a loss of meaning or a fractured relationship with belief, responsibility, and self. I work with people who want to understand themselves properly, not just manage symptoms. Experiences such as religious trauma, diaspora identity, internalised racism, and racial trauma sit at the centre of my work. My role is not to offer quick fixes. It is to help you think clearly about your life, your history, and the patterns you find yourself repeating, especially the ones you already recognise but cannot shift.

High-functioning but exhausted? I help professionals and high-achieving adults who look fine on the outside but feel tired, wired, or out of sync regain clarity, calm and resilience. From the outside, you may look like you’re coping well. You’re capable, responsible, and used to managing pressure. But underneath, you might feel increasingly tired, wired, or out of sync with your body. Sleep may be disrupted. Brain fog, irritability, and self-doubt can creep in. You may feel you’re not functioning at your usual level — and that can be unsettling when you’re used to being on top of things.

EMDR Counsellors
Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
