Transgender Counselling in Edinburgh
Hello, I’m Nick, I’m a pluralistic counsellor offering trauma informed, LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent inclusive therapy.
I work in a grounded, gentle and collaborative way, where the relationship between myself and my clients creates an empathic, exploratory space to focus on the issues that have brought them to counselling. As a pluralistic therapist, I draw on a range of different methods from the counselling world to help you explore your values, feelings and experiences, identify changes you would like to make, and support you as you work towards your goals. I work exclusively online or on the phone, with individual adults.

I have worked with clients from varying backgrounds, circumstances and groups, although I have most experience working with anxiety, depression and identity issues. An ideal client for me is one who simply can recognise that they are not happy with the status quo of their life and are ready to face themselves to work towards personal growth. They would be ready to challenge themselves and be ready for the hardships that may bring. They would want to improve their autonomy, their agency and be willing to change their perspective and outlook on life.

Does it feel like the world doesn’t understand you, are you seeking clarity, and craving change?
Your story is yours to write, and counselling can be part of that process. I believe that finding yourself isn’t about following a predetermined script—it’s about exploring, questioning, and embracing every part of who you are, even the pieces that feel uncertain. Whether your journey feels like Elphaba’s - misunderstood, pushing against norms, carving your own path - or Galinda’s - searching for clarity, transformation, and connection - self-discovery is an adventure.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender-diverse individuals often navigate complex experiences shaped by societal norms, prejudice, and sometimes personal identity struggles.
I grew up in Namibia and came to England at 33. I qualified as a counsellor in 2008 after volunteering as a Samaritan and Samaritan team lead for 4 years and completing my counselling placement at a local charity. I set up my private practice in 2010 and qualified as a supervisor in 2011 after volunteering for Cruse Bereavement Care as a support worker, trainer, and supervisor. I also facilitated an LGBTQ+ peer support group and managed a counselling service for a charity.
I offer counselling to individuals aged 16 plus. I have a specialist interest in supporting LGBTQ+ people.
Please leave a message and I will get back to you.

These conflicts manifest as, e.g. anxiety, depression, self-destructive behaviours, especially in relationship with others. Psychodynamic therapy can be effective in enabling life long change. I am a queer and neurodivergent therapist looking to provide a safe, non-judgemental space for other queer, neurodivergent, and/or polyamorous people. I offer mixed-methods therapy with a CBT focus, with an adaptable approach to suit your needs.
I am acutely aware of how both queerness and neurodiversity are misunderstood and misrepresented, both in the therapeutic field and more widely, and so I am passionate about creating a service that takes these issues and needs seriously, offering people the help they need in a way that works for them without fear of being judged or patronised.

Are you feeling trapped in patterns of behaviour that made sense in the past but hold you back now? Perhaps you're constantly reliving traumatic experiences in your mind or body, or feeling shame, self-criticism, anger or anxiety that you can't seem to change. Together we'll notice the feelings, beliefs, sensations and memories that show up for you in each moment, and find ways you can respond to these feelings that leave you feeling calm, self-compassionate and more resolved. If talking hasn't changed the difficulties you're experiencing, or your body feels stuck in past experiences, this way of working might be a good fit for you.

Counselling with me provides you with a space of radical acceptance to explore your beliefs, your identities, and your experiences of the world. Together, we will co-create a space to experiment with new ways of being. Or a place to integrate or challenge yourself. Or simply some time and space to be heard, and get curious about the meaning of your life (past, present, future).
I work with a wide range of people and you are welcome to get in touch if my profile resonates with you. Often, I work with activists, the LGBTQIA+ community, kinky people, poly people, neurodiverse people, outsiders and edge-walkers (and more).

Every individual has their own unique journey towards self-acceptance. In our work together, I will help you gain deeper insight into the challenges you are facing and consider ways to bring about meaningful change. We will mutually agree on a pace that feels right for you to start looking more deeply into what is causing you to suffer. Together, we'll explore ways to challenge negative or harmful patterns and identify healthier alternatives. My approach is primarily person-centered, though I may also draw from other therapeutic styles using a holisitic/psychospiritual lens to support the shift towards healing the whole self.

Transgender Counsellors
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognise a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognise a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
