My speciality is in working with Trauma, I have worked for 25yrs supporting men and women who have experienced Childhood Abuse, Domestic Abuse or Rape & Sexual Assault .
I am an experienced Counsellor and can offer a safe and confidential space to help you look at what it is that is making life difficult. We all at times struggle to know how to manage and cope with how we feel and whilst we know it's important to look after our physical health, we also need to take care of our hearts and minds, I see my role as one of helping you make sense of what might be causing you to feel depressed, anxious, even that life feels too much, your relationships might be affected or going to work is just too hard, you might know the cause and just need to be heard and supported to see a way forward.

I specialise in child sexual abuse , trauma/complex trauma, PTSD, anxiety, bereavement, depression, loss, grief, relationship issues, panic attacks, and generic counselling.
Sometimes, we try to make sense of our world, thoughts, feelings and emotions. We might find ourselves repeating patterns of behaviour in our present lives due to past experiences and patterns. I want to help you shift mental blocks, untangle complex emotions, resolve issues and reveal new perspectives. Whether it’s self-development, addressing emotional and psychological issues, or processing traumatic events, I will work with you both Psychodynamically and in a Person-centred way as the need arises. Delivering both online and face to face therapies in the centre of Edinburgh, we will work together to help you achieve your goal.

While I'm especially interested in working with existential issues and those affected by narcissism, I'm also experienced in working with sexual abuse and young people with attachment difficulties.
Hi there, my name is Ana and I'm a psychodynamic counsellor specialising working with those affected by parental narcissism and existential issues. If you feel stuck in a loop or unable to find joy in life, I can offer my curiosity, empathy, and insights to help you find meaning in your experience. To do this, I will often draw on my background in psychology and philosophy, as well as psychodynamic therapy which looks at the unconscious processes between us and find links between what you're experiencing in the present and your early childhood and family experiences. On top of this, I use a systemic lens when working with families.

Life is a series of changes, often bringing loss and pain but also the seeds of a positive transformation. Even if you're unsure how to move forward, a theme can emerge. Counselling can facilitate a new understanding of ourselves, our different relationships, our place in the world. By reassessing hopes and fears, we can work towards the difference we want to experience. Alongside general counselling, I have specialist experience in post-natal depression and traumatic emotional and sexual abuse . My approach, however, is to treat every person without presumptions, trusting the space that opens up and finding the best way for you.

My work is trauma-informed, and I have specific training to work with CPTSD, domestic violence and sexual abuse /trauma.
Have you ever asked yourself, "How did I get here?" or "Will I ever feel better?" Maybe something has happened to you recently or in the past. You do your best daily, yet you still feel easily overwhelmed by your thoughts and emotions. Perhaps you struggle to find the 'right' words to talk about it and shut down if others ask how you are. You feel lonely and like nobody understands you. Maybe you tell yourself, "I can't be struggling right now," because you are scared of what may happen if you aren't okay. You are exhausted and want things to change. As someone who's been there personally, I am confident I can support you.

Just Human Therapy is a humanist, feminist, LGBTQ+ affirming online counselling service based in Edinburgh. Going to therapy can feel tough, so I aim to make it as approachable as possible. If you are going through a transition that feels difficult, would like support working through something specific, or simply know something doesn't feel right, therapy is a space you deserve to work through things. Often this isn't a quick fix, but an explorative process to come back to who you are and what you need. If you're struggling with low mood, lingering trauma affects, or obsessive worry, I can help you figure out what's going on.

Trauma can include life-threatening events or simply moments where you were overwhelmed and felt helpless. A troubling or terrifying event has an impact on the whole person – it is held in the body, changes ways of thinking, and often comes with an overwhelming set of emotional and behavioural responses. At times, these changes and responses are unhelpful and seriously affect people’s quality of life and their ability to move forward. Working together, we explore and come to understand your current responses. We identify tools that you can use to rebuild your life in a way that works for you.

What if you could be kinder to yourself? What if you could experience less anxiety and low mood? What if you could be supported in healing from past traumas? What if you could become more assertive and set healthy boundaries? Perhaps you don’t know what’s wrong but you’re feeling unsettled, sad, anxious, confused, or stressed. You might have put on a happy mask for too long and you’re exhausted. I invite you to imagine how things could be different and, with this hope - no matter how small the hope might be-, I invite you to get in touch with me.

I love working with people, getting to know you and hearing your story. I believe that we are all unique. One of the things I love most about my work is the privilege of seeing someone begin to thrive and to enjoy their life again. I love helping to find some inner calm, clarity of thought and to be practicing self compassion as part of their everyday lives. I work in a bespoke way, tailor making my approach to each person. However, that said, everyone's needs compassion and so a compassion focused therapy approach runs through all of my work. I am most definitely a human first and a psychologist second.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
