People come to counselling for many reasons. Sometimes this decision is motivated by a need for change or perhaps having to deal with unexpected change. For others it may be a desire to talk, to understand and be understood. I believe there can be real value in talking with someone who is trained and experienced to listen in a way that allows you to feel heard and understood. I provide a safe and non-judgemental space where we can explore the issues that you want to address.

The first session is an opportunity to hear what brings you to therapy. We will assess the level and impact of the difficulty you are facing on your life, which will create a baseline that we will use later to monitor progress. We will then focus on finding out what you would like to gain from our work together. Often, clients know what they do not want, but identifying what they would like to change is harder. My role is to help you with that. Studies show that awareness of your needs is the first crucial step in the process of change

I offer therapy to individuals and couples facing difficulties with their relationships, life and career choices. I believe communication, or lack of, is often at the root of many problems. It can be difficult to express our feelings and often we don't feel that we are heard or understood by the the important people in our lives. It may be that you have low self esteem and find relationships of all kinds difficult. You may be scared or perhaps you don't feel valued or cherished in your relationship. I will help you to explore the reasons behind this and work with you so that you can become the person you would like to be.

You may be feeling hurt, sad, anxious, angry, nervous, ashamed or lonely. Or a combination of these. Maybe you lack confidence or self esteem . Maybe your social or intimate relationships are causing you stress. Maybe you lack self-care. Maybe, quite simply, life could be better. Importantly, neither searching the internet nor self help books have been enough, and you need someone to talk to. Someone who will listen to you without judgement, and who will acknowledge and help you process your sometimes overwhelming feelings. Equally, you may be looking for a therapist to work with by way of self development.

Hello, I'm Shirley and I am an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. I deliver CBT online and by telephone as this is convenient for you to be in your home/suitable location, at a time that suits you, without travelling to appointments. CBT is a problem-specific and pragmatic approach which helps you identify your specific issues and then we can work together to give you tools and strategies that help you make changes in your life. CBT helps you understand the importance of thinking and how it affects how you feel and what you do. I will help you stay in control and manage your own recovery on a long-term basis.

Being human is hard, but you don't have to go it alone. I can help you gain clarity about your needs and values. To slow down and pay more attention to your thoughts and emotional or behavioural patterns, which may be happening automatically or out of habit. To understand what their intentions are or what they’re trying to tell you about your life. To understand how you relate and talk to yourself, and to develop a more compassionate voice towards your self. This understanding will then be our guide for helping you to set goals and priorities for your therapy or your life, and for supporting you to work towards them.

Self Esteem Counsellors

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
