In my practice, I work with people who find it difficult to know and express what they want. I also work with clients who have experienced loss, trauma and displacement and therefore lack a sense of safety and belonging. I am experienced in working with people who find it challenging to regulate their emotions and fall into uncontrollable outbursts of confusion, anger, terror and worry. Finally, I specialise in working with individuals who struggle to form and sustain satisfying relationships and so suffer from feelings of worthlessness and emptiness.

I don’t know if you have ever had the opportunity to share your story where someone really listens. I mean really listens, wanting to know you, your story, your ups and downs. Where nothing is off limits. Space to speak what maybe you’ve never spoken before. Sitting in the counsellee seat is not always easy and opening up to someone you do not know can be daunting. I know that taking that first step requires courage and I would love to walk with you on your journey.

Hello, I'm Gemma (and this is my guinea pig Lucy for added cute!) Thanks for clicking on my profile. Counselling may be useful to you if you are experiencing some emotional upset or change. Maybe you are going through an immediate crisis, or have a sense of something not being quite right which is beginning to affect your day to day life. Together we can explore what's happening for you right now, consider how the past may be impacting your current reality and then start to imagine how you want your future to look.

What if. Two words that send your mind down a well-worn path. Words and images that pop into your head at any moment and no matter how hard you try to push it away you find yourself stuck; thinking, feeling and doing the same thing over and over. Maybe it’s reliving the past, maybe it’s worrying about the future, or feeling you need to do something right now or something bad will happen. “What if” is hard to live with. But when your mind is stuck in the “what if’s” your brain is telling you there is something you need to figure out, something you need to rebalance.

The first session is an opportunity to hear what brings you to therapy. We will assess the level and impact of the difficulty you are facing on your life, which will create a baseline that we will use later to monitor progress. We will then focus on finding out what you would like to gain from our work together. Often, clients know what they do not want, but identifying what they would like to change is harder. My role is to help you with that. Studies show that awareness of your needs is the first crucial step in the process of change

I have 30 years experience giving counselling, I’ve been a specialist NHS eating disorders therapist, addictions therapist, CAMHS therapist, Adult mental health clinician and counselling manager. I’m neurodivergant informed and developing a government counselling service for Special schools. There are many reasons why people come to counselling, we all struggle at times and may experience anxiety, low mood, loss or find life harder to cope with. It’s scary to ask for support, I understand this, I grew up in a family with complex needs and this experience is the compassionate basis for my work, bringing a deep understanding.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioural therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behaviour therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom which may include antipsychotics, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety drugs.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
