Children and teenagers significantly benefit from counselling therapies, which studies demonstrate are highly effective both in the short and long term.
Defense mechanisms often develop as a way to protect ourselves from painful or difficult experiences, and these can lead to issues at home, school, and in relationships. Understanding the underlying reasons for our behaviours can facilitate positive changes, benefiting both the individual and the people around them.

I am a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, with 12 years experience working in NHS CAMHS teams and the charity sector.
I specialise in psychodynamic treatments for mental illness in children and adolescents. My approach is informed by attachment research, psychodynamic theory and developmental neuroscience. I believe that effective psychotherapy can take time, and that children and young people require adequate space to feel comfortable exploring their difficulties.

Has your child anxiety?
I offer a non-invasive, drug-free therapy based on primitive reflex integration. What is this? Primitive reflexes are genetic patterns that allow brain skills to function effectively. Some children, due to several reasons do not develop properly or don't integrate these reflexes.

I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with over ten years experience within children and adults mental health settings.
Hello and thank you for looking into my profile. It can be challenging finding the right therapist amidst a sea of warm faces and shiny profiles full of experience. However, I firmly believe that like any relationship, the therapeutic one needs to feel like a 'good fit' too. This outlook forms the ethos of my therapy practice as a counselling psychologist where I work in collaboration with a client to bring change through the healing properties of a relationship. At present, I am supporting clients to understand patterns of behaviours from early life that might be impacting adversely on contentment and relationships.

With 10 years of experience of helping children and young people, I'm BABCP accredited and hold a registration with the NMC.
Hi there, I'm Chris. Have you or a loved one been struggling to cope with anxiety, feeling overwhelmed or low? Maybe social situations are difficult to face, or work and studies are harder to manage? Perhaps you've been experiencing really difficult unwanted and intrusive thoughts, or feeling driven to repeat certain actions. Doing the things that you used to be able to do maybe just feels too heavy. If you're a loved one, maybe you've noticed your young person change from how they used to be. If any of this sounds familiar, I can help by providing a safe and open space to support you in overcoming these challenges.

You might feel stuck, unhappy or in distress. You might have experienced something difficult, or you are not even sure what is wrong. Maybe you feel your problem is too small to bring it to therapy. I offer a safe space where together we can work to make sense of your experience. I'm an integrative practitioner, which allows me to tailor the process depending on individual needs. I draw on a range of approaches such as transactional analysis, psychodynamic and person-centred models to provide the support you require in exploring issues and difficulties you are struggling with.

It is a courageous step to reach out to a therapist and, in recognition of this, I have wholeheartedly devoted over 30 years of my life to helping people create real and lasting change. I have completed a vast amount of psychological training and am guided by extensive experience in really hearing the parts of my clients’ experience which are keeping them ‘stuck’ or are barriers to happiness. I help people to understand crucial scientific findings about how the brain affects our happiness and I use the most effective techniques to help clients become liberated from unhelpful repetitive behaviours or thought patterns.

You may know exactly what you want from counselling or it may just be a feeling that something isn't right. It might be issues arising from the past or events that are affecting you right now - whatever it is, I believe talking about it can make a real difference. Counselling can feel quite daunting at times and I will be there to listen with warmth and empathy; to be alongside you when there are tough times and to laugh with you when life feels a little lighter. Working together, we can explore what's bothering you and perhaps look at other ways of coping with life so you can move forward with confidence and optimism.

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
