For older children and teenagers, talking therapy offers a unique, safe space to explore and understand feelings of sadness, anger, or anxiety.
Defense mechanisms often develop as a way to protect ourselves from painful or difficult experiences, and these can lead to issues at home, school, and in relationships. Understanding the underlying reasons for our behaviours can facilitate positive changes, benefiting both the individual and the people around them.

Although these defences—such as anxiety—are ways that our mind tries to keep us safe, they ultimately lead to further suffering.
I'm trained in person-centred therapy, which means quality of our relationship will determine the effectiveness of therapy. That's why I'm fiercely committed to providing you warmth, empathy and a lack of judgement, so you can explore your story in a safe way.

You may have issues with anxiety or trauma and are looking for ways to regulate or ground yourself and work through the trauma.
Art Therapy utilises the creation of artwork during the session as a means to discuss deeper feelings and concerns within a safe and confidential relationship. The artwork created in the session can help to express feelings that may have been buried, bringing the unconscious into the light and loosening it's power over you. You do not have to make artwork.

Is anxiety or low mood affecting your life?
Therapy will help you explore repetitive patterns, which can impact the view that you hold for yourself and others, and the quality you experience in your interpersonal relationships. Sessions at times might focus on past experiences which might still affect you, in order to process them and find new ways to move forward and live a fulfilling life.

I work with clients who struggle with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, grief, loss, childhood trauma and low self-esteem .
People come to counselling for many reasons. Sometimes this decision is motivated by a need for change or perhaps having to deal with unexpected change. For others it may be a desire to talk, to understand and be understood. I believe there can be real value in talking with someone who is trained and experienced to listen in a way that allows you to feel heard and understood. I provide a safe and non-judgemental space where we can explore the issues that you want to address.

My clients often focus on anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, relationships, masculinity, femininity, nonmonogamy, neurodivergence, immigration, disability, and intimacy.
I offer trauma-informed, somatic therapy using techniques from ACT, attachment science, Solution Focused therapy, & Brainspotting (a newer modality from EMDR). This integrative approach can help you to emotionally regulate and make lasting changes, rather than just revelations. My background was originally a master's in Couple and Family therapy. This foundation informs how I look at client's attachment styles and patterns in relationships. I then went on to specialize with couples and individuals in a psychosexual therapy clinic, before landing in my passion doing trauma and talk therapy for individuals.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
