Living with worry, loss, prejudice, lack of autonomy, difficult work or family issues, can leave you feeling, stuck, shut down, drained, disconnected, depressed, stressed, anxious or lonely. Did your childhood environment feel unsafe? Did you feel unseen or misunderstood? Are you consumed by the expectations of others an have lost touch with who you really are. Maybe you tend to put others first, perhaps jump into romantic relationships too quickly and deeply; or have decided you are better off alone, yet part of you longs for connection. Maybe the values or beliefs of your family or culture are at odds with your authentic identity.

I provide a safe, non-judgemental, creative space for you to share your story, make sense of it and become the author of your future. Sometimes we can't or don't want to talk about the difficult stuff. In sessions with me you'll be equipped with creative tools to express yourself authentically. You might like to work through a particular issue, or maybe you want a weekly space dedicated to your self care, where you can explore and express yourself creatively. I work with adults (including couples) and young people with anxiety, low mood, stress, depression, autism including late diagnosis, grief, ADHD, bi-polar disorder, and trauma.

I work with more defined issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, phobias and OCD as well as more general issues such as low self-esteem.
How are you navigating life at the moment? You may have been suffering from emotional discomfort for a while, perhaps it's more recent or maybe the pandemic has had an effect on your mental health. You are not alone, 1 in 4 of us are affected by mental health issues at some point in our lives. Looking for support to understand what you are feeling can be life changing. How we make sense of ourselves, the world and our place in it can affect our relationships, friendships, careers, social lives perhaps even robbing us of our potential. Therapy, through insight and application can deliver acceptance, change, clarity and relief.

Some of the issues people struggle with are: Anxiety / Depression / Anger / Building confidence and self-esteem / Changing negative habit / Loss / Stress / Relationships / Improving communication / ACEs & PTSD / Recognising and regulate comorbidities generated by ASD, Asperger Syndrome, ADHD, Borderline Disorder / Chronic Pain Co-dependency / sexuality.
Counselling is non-judgmental, does not tell you what to do, but it encourages you to seek out your own choices in life to become complete. There are many different therapeutic tools to help a person to communicate emotions, we can use creative materials, sand and art when verbal communication is tricky. I offer counselling face to face and online: via Zoom, WhatsApp, and FaceTime platforms, in English and Portuguese languages.

Starting therapy can seem daunting and scary at first. But it's the first step you have taken to embark on this journey. Feeling isolated and not able to make sense of the world around you? Questioning all that you have grown up with? Racing thoughts constantly clouding your mind? Feeling detached, anxious or upset? Not sure how to process what you are experiencing? All this seems pretty overwhelming but more common than you think. Through acceptance and kindness why not allow yourself to be able to make sense of all this through therapy. Let each session speak for itself and discover different parts of yourself.

When we are trying to make sense of our situation or understand ourselves, we may feel we need someone to hear us. Or it can be a feeling of uncertainty, something about how you are feeling isn't quite right. We are all part of an interconnected world influenced by and influencing our relationships and situations. For this reason I give attention to what is happening now, your personal history, life situation and narrative.

You may be considering counselling to address family issues, problems in relationships or unresolved issues from your past. Without support life can be overwhelming, stressful and confusing, leading to anxiety or depression. Seeking support through counselling is a significant step forward to work through your issues for a more promising future. Counselling works! I know this from experiencing it from both sides, as client and counsellor.  However experience has taught me that therapy isn't a one size fits all thing, we are all different, with our own unique story.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
