I know how overwhelming it can feel trying to find a therapist who is right for you. It is sometimes hard to get a feel for what kind of person a therapist really is beyond their qualifications and training... which is kind of important if you are going to be vulnerable with them! Let me show you a little of who I am so you can see if we are a good match. My name is Rose. Before I began facilitating healing for others, I spent years dedicated to my own healing. I experienced severe & complex trauma as a child and teenager that resulted in various forms of dis-ease in my adult life.I tried talking therapies and although I could under

I work with people who want to take time to understand themselves and build skills that will support them for a lifetime. In therapy sessions, we’ll work together to understand current problems and how they came about, and find useful tools you can use long-term to solve them. I specialize in anxiety/worry, low mood, self-esteem, relationship issues, OCD, bulimia, emotional dysregulation, and recovering from trauma. I love helping clients discover how their emotions work and build confidence in themselves and their relationships, to create more fulfilling and balanced lives.

It is a courageous step to reach out to a therapist and, in recognition of this, I have wholeheartedly devoted 30 years of my life to helping people create real and lasting change. I have completed a vast amount of psychological training and am guided by extensive experience in really hearing the parts of my clients’ experience which are keeping them ‘stuck’ or are barriers to happiness. I help people to understand crucial scientific findings about how the brain affects our happiness and I use the most effective techniques to help clients become liberated from unhelpful repetitive behaviours or thought patterns.

The core conditions of Therapy are congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy. In other words, a genuine space to be yourself and have someone understand what you are experiencing. Within therapy, you should experience a safe place to express exactly what you are feeling and not be judged upon those feelings. Therapy should be what you need it to be for you.

I work with individuals aged 12 and up at the moment. You may have issues with anxiety or trauma and are looking for ways to regulate yourself and work through the trauma. There may be attachment issues established in childhood that have been unhelpful in adulthood. Perhaps you require a confidential place to process distressing things you have experienced, or somewhere to take ownership of your story and change your narrative.

Sometimes, we try to make sense of our world, thoughts, feelings and emotions. We might find ourselves repeating patterns of behaviour in our present lives due to past experiences and patterns. I want to help you shift mental blocks, untangle complex emotions, resolve issues and reveal new perspectives. Whether it’s self-development, addressing emotional and psychological issues, or processing traumatic events, I will work with you both Psychodynamically and in a Person-centred way as the need arises. Delivering both online and face to face therapies in the centre of Edinburgh, we will work together to help you achieve your goal.

I am an experienced BACP accredited & registered counsellor with 20 years experience, & 12 years as a state registered community & mental health OT. Perhaps past events affect how you cope with life today, or patterns repeat in your relationships. Maybe you need a place to be heard; to express yourself & explore difficulties. I offer a relational approach, helping you to move forward by understanding yourself better. We can explore & think about how your past affects your present. Alternatively some past events may be very alive in your mind & may need to be processed with an experienced professional.

I help with anxiety, relationship anxiety, difficult family dynamics and depression. You are more than welcome here and I want to help you feel empowered in your life and relationships by first empowering you. I believe that counselling is for everyone and that through a relational and empathic approach, I can help you to find healing, encouragement and hope by embracing who you are, your story, and your personal goals. I also have experience working with self-harm and I believe counselling can help in understanding these behaviours in a non-judgmental way as you move forward in your healing journey.

I help angry people, to reduce or remove the need to be angry. I help people to communicate more authentically, to get the outcomes that help them. I help people to see conflict as a tool, rather than something to avoid. I help people to understand their unmet needs, and how to get them met well, for healthier lifestyles. I help people make sense of their behaviours, and to decide whether to keep them, or to find good reason to change them. I help people to understand and name their emotions, and to know what to do with them instead of hoping they go away.

When we can do this, we are better equipped to make the choices that are right for us and to live in more satisfying ways. If you are struggling with something in your life, talking it through in a confidential space with a trained and experienced listener can help make sense of problems, offer new perspectives & clarify choices.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
