Counselling and psychotherapy can serve a two-fold purpose. The first is helping us navigate what life serves up – often a crisis or painful experience, while the second is as a tool in continuing self-development. While it is usually the first which initially brings people to counselling, the second can be helpful in exploring areas such as low mood, procrastination or a lack-lustre feeling about life in general. My work is informed by psychodynamic practice and psychoanalytic theory, both of which provide valuable insight into the complexities of human development, relationships, and experience.

As a psychologist (HCPC) and counsellor (BACP), I specialise in creating space for ambitious people struggling with self doubt and anxiety, to hear themselves think, realign with what matters most to them, feel calmer and thrive. I’ve supported many through the challenges of reclaiming their life from anxiety and self-doubt, helping them reconnect with themselves and what matters most. If life has left you feeling overwhelmed or disconnected from yourself and your loved ones, we can work together to make sense of your experiences and develop personalised strategies to restore your sense of integrity, purpose, and connection.

What if you could experience pleasurable sex without worries, pain, shame, or sexual function difficulties? What if you could be supported in healing from sexual trauma? What if you could set healthy boundaries and communicate your needs and preferences? What if you could explore, understand, and enjoy your sexuality, sexual orientation, gender identity, sexual desire, and eroticism? Perhaps you don’t know what’s wrong but you’re feeling anxious or confused about intimacy. Perhaps you've identified beliefs or past experiences that stop you from enjoying your sexuality. I invite you to get in touch with me for psychosexual therapy.

Bu Therapy works with YOU. You are, after all, the expert with what is going on in your life today. Together we will work on areas that might be affecting your life and what you would like to change. CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) looks at the present rather than the past and identifies negative or maladaptive thinking styles that make you see things differently and out of focus. I will work with you in a collaborative manner so we can correct this “blurred view” of life and bring clarity, focus, and direction back into your life, and “together we can come out of the darkness and into the light".

Are you a parent concerned about your child's happiness, anxiety, well-being or behaviour? I’m here to help. With over 30 years of experience working with children and young people including as a CBT therapist, I specialise in empowering young individuals to conquer anxiety and take control of their lives. Behaviours like anger often mask underlying feelings and needs. Anger might conceal feelings of frustration, hurt, or fear. In many cases, these behaviours serve as a defence mechanism to cope with internal struggles such as stress, insecurity, or unresolved emotions.

You’re probably experiencing some difficulties at the moment, either as a couple or as an individual, and looking for a space to explore what is going on for you, understand why you feel as you do, and perhaps put in place some strategies for making a positive change. You may be looking to communicate better with your partner, or thinking about ending a relationship. You may be going through the stress of infertility, or have experienced the loss of a baby, and are looking for a place to talk through your thoughts and feelings. You are not alone in looking for support, so there is no need to feel uncomfortable in doing so.

Are you an ADHDer or do you suspect you might be? Do you want to explore the value of accessing a diagnosis? How are you negotiating a world that is not set up for ADHDers? Perhaps you're feeling 'less than' others and left behind as those around you forge ahead in their careers, studies and relationships. Maybe you're losing sleep, coping in unhelpful or addictive ways, or perhaps you just can't stop the busyness in your brain. Your circumstances and background have shaped your life and you have not had much choice in that. Now it's time to learn new ways to approach your difficulties, to take charge of what comes next.

Counselling is a process that is different for everyone, and I am happy to work with you over the long term or short term, depending on your needs. I like to work collaboratively, exploring together the challenges you face. We can work together find ways to address the past, present and move forward into the future in a positive and healthy way. Being able to untangle some of the problems that trouble us can help lead to better relationships with others and ourselves, and ultimately a healthier, happier outlook. These problems and issues can sometimes feel unmanageable on your own, and this is where counselling can help.

Hello and welcome! I'm Nicoletta, a qualified therapist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I offer in-person or online sessions if you prefer the comfort of your own space. My approach is based on the core principles of trauma-informed practice which means that I work within a non-hierarchical framework that offers safety, choices, collaboration, trustworthiness and transparency. As we do not live in a vacuum, I firmly believe in the importance of exploring sociocultural, environmental and economic factors that contribute to the origin and maintenance of psychological distress.

Life can be challenging and is perhaps leaving you wondering what to do next. Feeling anxious, with low self esteem and depression around relationship troubles, grief, loss and traumatic experiences. Situations in life that perhaps you feel are needing some time and space to work through in order to reach some deeper understanding and achieve a fresh perspective for moving forward.

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
