I am a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist based in Ayrshire. I work predominantly with a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach, but also draw on other therapeutic approaches to provide a more integrative and tailored therapy for you. There are times when we all experience situations that cause distress or uncertainty and it can be difficult to move past these events or to speak to those close to us.

I have extensive work with Men's issues, addiction, and grief.
It can often be a bit of a struggle to take that first step into making contact with a counsellor, and it’s important that everyone who approaches my practice is treated with respect. Counselling allows us to explore and understand ourselves and work towards new ways of coping while improving our overall wellbeing in an environment where we feel safe and supported.

I specialise in working with clients facing bereavement, men's issues, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and addiction.
Hello, I am Soban! Thank you for visiting my profile. If you’re feeling weighed down by anxiety, stress, or a deep sense of disconnection, you don’t have to go through it alone. Maybe you’ve been quietly carrying your emotions, feeling like you should be able to manage everything by yourself, or perhaps you're unsure how to even begin talking about what’s really going on. Whether the pressure comes from work, relationships, or the weight of cultural or personal expectations, it can feel overwhelming. At some point, we all reach a moment where something needs to change.

Many of us carry deep wounds from our childhoods and early lives, often without being completely conscious of it. Still raw, or thickly scarred, these traumas can manifest in our adult lives, through sensitivity to hurt, inflexibility or unhelpful, self defeating behaviours. In time these unhealed wounds can wreak havoc in our lives and relationships. When this day comes we are left with two choices, either carry on as best we can, condemned to repeat the hurts of the past, or learn to give ourselves the care and love we have always deserved. Counselling offers an opportunity to begin a new life of healing and growth.

Perhaps you're feeling a little stuck or unsure about things at the moment. Perhaps life is a bit overwhelming. There may be a sense that something needs to be addressed but you can't quite articulate it. Perhaps you've considered therapy in the past; you're not sure what it's like or if it's really for you, but maybe you're feeling curious enough to find out? I consider therapy to be a gift: something we can give ourselves: a space where you can talk about the things which are important to you in order to understand your situation and facilitate positive change.

The most important aspect of success in counselling is the relationship between us. I tailor the approach to your needs in collaboration with you so that ultimately you can become your own therapist, by applying new skills and techniques to determine positive patterns of thinking and behaving. I understand that coming for therapy can be a bit scary or daunting, even if you have been before, meeting someone new can be challenging especially if you’re feeling vulnerable or out of sorts. Choosing to come for therapy is about caring for and prioritising your own needs, and allowing yourself time and space to think things through.

Hello and thank you for looking into my profile. It can be challenging finding the right therapist amidst a sea of warm faces and shiny profiles full of experience. However, I firmly believe that like any relationship, the therapeutic one needs to feel like a 'good fit' too. This outlook forms the ethos of my therapy practice as a counselling psychologist where I work in collaboration with a client to bring change through the healing properties of a relationship. At present, I am supporting clients to understand patterns of behaviours from early life that might be impacting adversely on contentment and relationships.

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
