Marriage Counselling in Cumbernauld
Hello, and thank you for visiting. I am a qualified person-centred therapist, offering a warm, empathic, and non-judgmental space to safely explore whatever may be holding you back or contributing to discomfort or unhappiness. I am originally from the US, and I bring an integrative, personalised approach to tailor sessions to your unique needs. Alongside talk therapy, I am EMDRIA-certified in EMDR and have also trained extensively in IFS-informed EMDR. I value how these two models (EMDR and IFS) work together to support deep and lasting change. Some of my areas of focus include trauma, attachment, depression and anxiety.

Your relationships affect the way you feel and difficulties can make you very unhappy, hurt and angry. One in five say their relationship is in distress. Some reasons people give are - emotional pain and distress, feeling unloved, conflict, infidelity, sex, different outlooks, children, career, addiction or family relationships. Communication, is often cited as at the heart of a distressed relationship, each of us thinks we are clear about telling our loved ones what is going on for us and we get frustrated when they just ‘don’t hear us’. It can all be very confusing and difficult to resolve.

Much of what has hurt us in life has happened in relationships with others. I know too, that relationships can also be a source of healing and that a therapeutic relationship can offer a chance to have a different experience of what relationships can be. I offer you a space to explore any issues that are important, or are of concern to you. My own experiences of life, and my personal journey and development, has given me an insight into myself and others that allows me to work in a compassionate and non-judgemental way

I believe mental health is just as important as physical health, the two are intricately bound together. In a non-judgemental, warm and supportive environment, I will help you to understand where the problems you are experiencing have arisen. We will work out why they have become so problematic and hard to deal with. I will help you to find strategies to cope better and tools to help you unpick patterns and to move on in your life, feel stronger and more content. As with any problem, the sooner it is acknowledged, the sooner you can begin your recovery. This is true of emotional and physical issues, as well as practical.

I have a COSCA accredited Diploma in Person Centred counselling meaning that I offer a safe, non-judgemental space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings. I have a creative, eclectic approach and can bring other models into the counselling room where appropriate such as CBT, small world, gestalt and even music. At the moment I offer on-line and telephone counselling, however, post pandemic would also offer outdoor walking therapy.

Marriage Counselling
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
