Life can feel overwhelming at times, and it’s not always easy to know where to start when you want things to change. I use an integrative approach to therapy, which means I tailor sessions to you - your experiences, your goals, and what feels right for you. While I focus on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to help you understand the link between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, I also bring in techniques from other therapy styles like compassion-focused therapy to make sure it meets your individual needs. I aim to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can be open and explore what’s really going on.

Often life can throw things at us which can be very challenging and difficult to cope with. As a result, we may feel anxious, angry or sad. Often having someone walk alongside us on our journey, and having time and space to process these things can be very useful. If this is where you are at the moment, counselling might be something to think about.

Your relationships affect the way you feel and difficulties can make you very unhappy, hurt and angry. One in five say their relationship is in distress. Some reasons people give are - emotional pain and distress, feeling unloved, conflict, infidelity, sex, different outlooks, children, career, addiction or family relationships. Communication, is often cited as at the heart of a distressed relationship, each of us thinks we are clear about telling our loved ones what is going on for us and we get frustrated when they just ‘don’t hear us’. It can all be very confusing and difficult to resolve.

Welcome to Gateway Counselling (Lanarkshire). My name is Rosamond and I am available to offer counselling within a secure environment in order to explore whatever is happening in your life. Here at Gateway we understand that there are times in our lives when we feel overwhelmed, at a loss and without hope concerning our past, our present and even our future. As Steve Jobs said “sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick”. It is because of this that i, myself, undertook personal counselling. This then led to my desire to reach out to others who face trauma and challenges in life where professional support and help is needed.

Sometimes we experience changes or traumas that leave us struggling with the pressures of life, relationships, work, or studies. This can affect our self-esteem, our sense of identity, and our ability to cope. This can become overwhelming and may lead us to unhelpful or harmful thoughts and behaviours. With help, we can overcome our difficulties and learn to manage our emotions more effectively. With compassion, empathy, respect, and a safe space, we feel heard, considered, and valued. By understanding our thoughts and behaviours we can feel empowered to make positive changes that can lead us to fuller and more enjoyable lives.

Sometimes life throws challenges in front of us which we may struggle to cope with. This could be a sudden and unexpected change like a loss or bereavement. It could be something that we have always struggled with that is making it challenging to move forward with life. Situations such as these can be stressful, and sometimes we can't shake off the anxiety and depression or we may even experience anhedonia (inability to feel pleasure in usually pleasurable activities). It might also be a past trauma or abuse that is causing the challenges in the present life, revealing itself as panic for example.

Having the right fit (“therapeutic alliance”) with your psychologist is viewed as the most crucial factor in the healing process. I would encourage you to choose a practitioner with a broad life experience as well as a clinical training in a range of evidence-based psychological therapies. A former lawyer, I practised human rights & social justice law for years in the courts in the UK. This led to my interest in psychology & trauma & therapies to overcome psychological difficulties. I’ve lived in Canada, France, Italy & Scotland and have travelled all over the world, so I hope to have a background which may help you.

I don’t believe you’re broken. There are troubling things happening in the world right now and the experiences we describe as anxiety, depression, and burnout are rational, understandable responses to a society that expects us to live in ways that hurt us. I work especially well with the overwhelm of everyday life and I would love to be your companion as you navigate your feelings, whether you're starting from a place of grief, anxiety, depression, struggles with work, or an exploration of your identity. I believe true happiness emerges when you're able to live as your true self, in community, and in alignment with your values.

Divorce Counsellors

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
