Hello and a warm welcome. Counselling is a process in which a trained therapist can help you to understand and deal with difficult emotions that you may be experiencing. These can be linked with previous difficult life experiences. People often seek counselling when they are going through challenging times in their lives. You may be feeling low, anxious or depressed. I can help you make sense of what is happening and try to help you to find ways of dealing with this.

Most of us will experience difficulties that we need support and help with. Therapy is one way to get help and involves talking openly and honestly with a sensitive and skilled listener, to agree and work towards meaningful change. It is a relational process, because talking to a professional about our difficulties requires safety and trust, which develops in the context of the therapy relationship. It takes courage to reach out and ask for help, especially when that means talking to a stranger. You don't have to face things on your own.

Welcome. If you’re reading this, something in your life is asking for attention—and I’m very glad you are here. Perhaps you're feeling anxious, low, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself. Maybe you find yourself constantly questioning whether you're good enough, putting everyone else's needs first, or carrying experiences from the past that still affect how you feel today and keep you awake at night. You might appear to be coping on the outside while feeling exhausted, stuck, or lost on the inside. Whatever has brought you here, welcome as you are.

I work with children, teenagers and young adults experiencing anxiety, low mood, trauma, eating difficulties, neurodiversity (including ADHD and autism), school avoidance, friendship issues, self-esteem, or major life changes. Families often come to me without knowing exactly what's wrong—only that their child seems unhappy, withdrawn, overwhelmed, or no longer themselves. I offer a warm, thoughtful space where young people can make sense of their experiences and begin to feel more confident, connected, and resilient.

Trauma can often impact our connection with ourselves, our emotions, and our sense of who we are. Together, we can explore your experiences, using approaches that support you to reconnect with your sense of self, recognise your strengths, and move towards greater understanding and self-compassion. Not all emotions or experiences can be easily expressed through words. I incorporate creative approaches, including visual and experiential methods, to help explore thoughts, feelings and experiences in ways that feel meaningful and accessible. This can support a deeper understanding of yourself and your journey at your own pace.

Imagine if you could regain control of your life so you felt happier, and were no longer dependant or worried about your substance use or problematic behaviours? Recovery for you is possible but sometimes we need a bit of help and guidance to get there.

Navigating life can be difficult. Sometimes we’re not even aware of how much energy we are putting into just getting through the day. We may develop strategies to cope with what we find overwhelming, trying to find a way to bring peace and calm only to find that the behaviours associated with these can either limit how we live our lives or become destructive. We can also begin to feel powerless to change these ways of coping that once seemed to work. I offer a space to begin to explore and make sense of your experience and where it has brought you so that you begin to consider what change might look and feel like for you.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
