I specialise in trauma and dissociation and use EMDR, parts work and somatic approaches as appropriate in working with trauma.
Psychotherapy is a rare invitation to speak and be listened to, to understand and be understood - a place to explore your self and your story, make sense of what you feel and why and ask how you might meet life's challenges in a more authentic, meaningful and fulfilling way. My approach is integrative, creative and embodied. It considers who you are and what happened to you, as well as what your heart desires. As a relational therapist, I also put your experience with me in therapy at the heart of our work together.

Are you feeling weighed down by low mood, anxiety, or trouble sleeping? Whether these feelings stem from a challenging life event, a major transition like changes in health or employment, or seem to have appeared out of nowhere, it can feel overwhelming. You may even feel stuck, unsure of how to move forward, and disconnected from the things and people that once brought joy and meaning to your life. When life feels this way, it’s easy to withdraw, which can unintentionally deepen those feelings of isolation and helplessness. But it doesn't have to stay this way!

I am trained in Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Re-Processing Therapy ( EMDR), which is an evidence-based trauma-focussed therapy.
I have worked with a variety of adult mental health problems for 20 years, for the past 12 years as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist. I am experienced in offering both brief and longer-term psychological therapies, and I am trained in understanding complex problems from a number of psychological perspectives. I believe it is important to be both informed by evidence-based practice and also offer support that is tailored to an individual’s unique needs. This is especially important if you are experiencing a number of difficulties and need a personalised formulation of those difficulties to guide the selection of therapy approaches.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
