Life feels hectic and busy most of the time. I'm sure at some point in the past we have all wished for a quiet moment to reboot our busy lives. So why is it so hard to make that happen? There are so many pressures we put on ourselves and the way we go about life..... if you need a neutral, supporting person to talk these feelings through with, or even some support in seeing things in a different way... I'm here! Friendly, enthusiastic and very supportive. No ones circumstances are the same and no one answer is right. We could find a new way of coping together to help you find the way to adjust to life today and going forward.

I'm Dawn, I'm a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor in West Central Scotland. My aim is growth and development, not just mental wellbeing, because you know you are brave enough to live a bigger life - with better relationships and more satisfaction. People often think that therapy is where you go when you’re depressed, or anxious. But often, we’re like this because we’re living a smaller, less expressive life than we’d like. I have over 7 years of experience supporting people who are struggling and stuck for a variety of reasons.

I work with most psychological difficulties and aim to provide a safe space to explore your individual experiences and challenges. I aim to develop a shared understanding of your experience to help us establish goals for therapy and beyond. These might include processing difficult experiences and gaining insights into patterns of thinking or behaving that are contributing to current difficulties. Life can become difficult for many reasons, and we all need support at times. I am caring, empathic and passionate about supporting people to overcome their difficulties. Anxiety, depression, bereavement and loss, trauma, relationship problems, sexual difficulties and low self-esteem are some of the things I can support you with. I have a particular interest in life transitions, especially menopause. However, therapy sessions don’t need to be limited to times of distress. Therapy can give you space to focus on your personal growth. It is a great way to take time to explore yourself, your needs and prioritise self-care.

The most important aspect of success in counselling is the relationship between us. I tailor the approach to your needs in collaboration with you so that ultimately you can become your own therapist, by applying new skills and techniques to determine positive patterns of thinking and behaving. I understand that coming for therapy can be a bit scary or daunting, even if you have been before, meeting someone new can be challenging especially if you’re feeling vulnerable or out of sorts. Choosing to come for therapy is about caring for and prioritising your own needs, and allowing yourself time and space to think things through.

It’s a big step to come to therapy, especially if you’ve had a lifetime of feeling different and not understood or heard. Maybe you experience anxiety and it’s starting to impact your life? Perhaps you have poor self-esteem and would like to set better boundaries? Have you or someone you care about recently received an autism or ADHD diagnosis and you’re having complicated feelings, not sure what to do now? Are you keen to please others but really harsh on yourself? I regularly work with people who answer 'yes' to these types of question.

If you are going through a stressful time or dealing with anxiety, it can be a challenge just getting through the day. A busy mind can be full of worries, fears and frustration, and you may find yourself putting on a face with others, or avoiding things you previously enjoyed. This keeps us locked in a vicious cycle, which is exhausting. The good news is that CBT can help. Together we can focus on what is keeping you stuck, and learn achievable coping strategies that help you take control, and get back to being you.

Facing the day with a niggling sense of confusion, unease or sadness will affect everything around you, it limits your ability to engage and really be in the moment. These feelings may be linked to a past event in your life, a situation you are currently in or you may be unclear as to why you feel this way. What is important is that at the centre is you. Often, we know we need to prioritise ourselves better, but maybe we do not know how to, we are unsure what we need and are hesitant to ask for this. Are you eager to find out why you respond the way you do? Why you think the way you do at times?

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
