I am trauma-informed, offering a calm, supportive environment for adults to explore their experiences in an empathetic environment.
Welcome. My name is Lesley Barker. I am a registered member of the BACP and pre accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist with the IACP, qualified to work with adults. I previously worked as a physiotherapist for 27 years, specialising in critical care and cardiac rehabilitation. I worked closely with clients, carers and families affected by chronic illness. This has given me a deep appreciation of the powerful connection between body, mind and emotion - and the importance of psychological support in physical and emotional healing.

I have extensive experience working women for relationship trauma and difficulties, grief/loss, menopause and intimacy.
The first steps we take on our healing journey can be the most challenging but finding the right therapist to work with that you can trust and feel comfortable with can make all the difference in helping you move forward and feel safe and supported in exploring the issues you are facing. I have always believed therapy should be an informal, authentic and relaxing experience. The therapeutic approach I offer is gentle and empathetic , you will find yourself at the centre of our therapy together building a trusting relationship, valuing your individuality rather than just working with your issue.

Life can be a challenge, especially now. As your therapist, I can offer you a secure and trusted space to bring your needs and concerns. I believe that therapy should lead to a “step change” where my clients become able to make an immediate difference to the way they think and their relationships with others. I work to build trust and empathy and strive to understand the world from your perspective. I can help you to understand that small changes to the way you see things can have a major impact on how you feel.

Much of that time has been spent working in the higher education sector, working with students facing anxiety, depression, trauma, or issues around neuro diversity amongst other challenges.
There are many reasons why life can feel difficult and I would work alongside you to explore your unique story, how and why you have arrived at this point. As a psychodynamic practitioner I have witnessed the profound benefits of uncovering the links between current patterns of behaviours, emotions, thoughts and our personal history.

Clients come to see me when they want fast, effective new outcomes for depression, anxiety, trauma, bereavement and relationship re-thinks.
Human Givens counselling is a brief therapy with most people as resourced as they want to be in around 4-6 sessions (sometimes less, occasionally a few more). It puts your time and money investments in context when you know you can move forward towards a full, healthy life quickly and confidently within a relatively short timeframe.

Sometimes, past events/ trauma can cause a lot of anxiety around food and our behaviour towards food.
I am a fully qualified counsellor registered with the BACP, and I am also qualified as an 'Eating disorders counsellor'. I believe that the client therapist relationship is crucial for my client to thrive. I can help you find a way through the overwhelm and anxiety to build a better long-term relationship with food.

Hi I'm Michelle and firstly, I want to say well done in taking the 1st step in seeking help by searching for a counsellor, it's not an easy step to take. Society is moving at such a fast pace that we don't take that time out to get a sense of our feelings about changes occurring in our lives, or to come to terms with other issues. We can often feel that our personal issues and challenges are not that big compared to other people's, however, if they are affecting your ability to live a fulfilled life then it is worth giving yourself space and time to process what is going on for you in your life through counselling.
