Trauma is often at the root of addiction; bereavement can be traumatising and anxiety is very oftem associated with trauma.
Welcome and hello. I work in person and online at Baldovie House Counselling and Psychotherapy. Our premises are just outside Montrose. We offer a safe tranquil and confidential environment. I view my job as helping you to say what it is that is troubling you and then working out what it is that you might want to change in your life and then helping you put that into practice. I work with an initial session where we explore these things and get to know one another. All my work is insured; I am registered with Information Commissioner for the keeping of personal information. Call, text or email and I'll respond within a day usually.

Welcome. My name is Lesley Barker. I am a registered member of the BACP and pre accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist with the IACP, qualified to work with adults. I previously worked as a physiotherapist for 27 years, specialising in critical care and cardiac rehabilitation. I worked closely with clients, carers and families affected by chronic illness. This has given me a deep appreciation of the powerful connection between body, mind and emotion - and the importance of psychological support in physical and emotional healing.

due to trauma, bereavement, neurodivergence and addictions etc.
Hello, I'm Steven - a BACP registered counsellor working with adult clients (18+). I bring warmth, acceptance and insight into the therapy room. As your counsellor, I would help you to make sense of and work through your difficulties - with your autonomy and empowerment always at the forefront. Acceptance, care, attention and wisdom can be extremely powerful tools for growth. I endeavour to provide those qualities in order to empower you to get to a better place. For me, helping a client to overcome their distress, and helping them to start thriving in life, are one in the same thing.

There are many reasons why life can feel difficult and I would work alongside you to explore your unique story, how and why you have arrived at this point. As a psychodynamic practitioner I have witnessed the profound benefits of uncovering the links between current patterns of behaviours, emotions, thoughts and our personal history.

I have considerable experience of working with depression, anxiety, coping with loss and bereavement, panic attacks, anger issues, intense guilt, trauma, childhood sexual abuse and difficulty in relating to others
We will look initially at your most pressing area of concern. By exploring past experiences can help in understanding in how you are behaving and feeling now. From here with new insights, deeper understanding and more freedom you will have more choices to respond to current situations rather than reacting from past defence mechanisms

Life can be a challenge, especially now. As your therapist, I can offer you a secure and trusted space to bring your needs and concerns. I believe that therapy should lead to a “step change” where my clients become able to make an immediate difference to the way they think and their relationships with others. I work to build trust and empathy and strive to understand the world from your perspective. I can help you to understand that small changes to the way you see things can have a major impact on how you feel.

I became interested in therapy through volunteering for a national bereavement charity for about 6 years.
My speciality is short term psychodynamic counselling but am able to work longer term if we decided through our work together that that would be more useful. I know that a lot can be achieved in a relatively short time and key to this is the establishment of a good therapeutic relationship where we can collaboratively identify the areas to explore.

Everybody has problems so why should you go for counselling? Problems are part of everyday life, we all encounter them and fortunately we are able to solve them the majority of the time without any intervention. Counselling may be beneficial to you if problems become all consuming and start to affect your personal happiness, perhaps take up a high percentage of your thinking time or in fact prevent you from doing day to day things. Today's fast pace of life does not always offer time to reflect on how we are feeling or help us understand why we become unhappy, low in mood and no longer enjoy life.

I have extensive experience working women for relationship trauma and difficulties, grief/ loss, menopause and intimacy.
The first steps we take on our healing journey can be the most challenging but finding the right therapist to work with that you can trust and feel comfortable with can make all the difference in helping you move forward and feel safe and supported in exploring the issues you are facing. I have always believed therapy should be an informal, authentic and relaxing experience. The therapeutic approach I offer is gentle and empathetic , you will find yourself at the centre of our therapy together building a trusting relationship, valuing your individuality rather than just working with your issue.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
