Are you feeling trapped, stuck and finding it difficult to get out of bed in the morning? The daily life feels tasteless and numb to you. You seem to remember who you used to be, but who you are, at this stage, uneasy, emotional, is very foreign to you. On the counselling journey with me, I will explore and assist you to trace down to the rootcauses of these symptoms (e.g. palpitations, panic, low mood, anger), and release the stuck parts in you from the past memories and present experiences.

Sometimes life feels overwhelming. You feel tired all the time. You notice you are easily irritated and lose control. It seems to be more and more difficult to shake off that feeling of unrest. Racing thoughts make it harder to fall asleep at night or to stay focused during the days. Distracted and irritated, you begin to doubt yourself and your professional decisions. Deadlines, project ideas, and other demanding responsibilities at work combined with different commitments at home and in the community make it difficult to find time to relax. In time, stress can cause serious mental and physical health problems.

Hello, I am a fully qualified Psychotherapist and Dramatherapist. In therapy, participants are supported to use creative expression to explore their stories, set goals, solve problems, express feelings and achieve improved mental health. Together in therapy there will be opportunities to consider how your personal life informs the way you experience the world. My work is influenced by trauma-informed approaches, which allow us to look at ourselves and understand why we may suffer. I am also a qualified secondary school teacher with extensive experience of working with people with trauma, autism, ADHD, anxiety, bereavement and loss.

A warm welcome. My name is Dr Anna Dako. As a trained therapist in somatic psychology, I believe that we are all born with inner resources that we inherit and embody and which are there to support us during hard times. What we often do not inherit are the skills in tapping into those resources. Being able to grow in capacity to help yourself with a gentle help of a practitioner is always a huge step in the right direction. In my practice, I always try to activate most natural methods for working with somatic experience, reflective expression, inner awareness and creative openness for change. To book a session, visit Dunami website.

I've seen first hand how supportive Art Psychotherapy can be. Dealing with all that life can throw at us can leave us feeling helpless, anxious, low and stuck. I work with individuals from all walks of life and different stages, experiencing difficulties such as anxiety, chronic illness, grief and loss to support them in feeling better emotionally. Art Psychotherapy helps engage the brain and body a little differently through creativity, art and image making, in addition to talking. Together, we can create a healing therapeutic environment where stories can be shared, emotions processed, and holistic wellbeing fostered.

We all deserve both psychological and emotional well-being!   Yet, sometimes ‘life’ grinds us down, we often lose our emotional resources and the psychological tools required to live a healthy and empowering lifestyle. As a counsellor and psychotherapist, my focus is to support individuals through distress and times of crisis.  Whatever your individual situation may be, my aim is to provide you with support in identifying any changes that can positively impact your day-to-day living; whether this be the development of specific skills, a greater understanding of yourself or your feelings.

Life can bring loss, change and many challenges, and it is understandable that at times we might look for support in facing them. I aim to provide a safe confidential space to help you on your journey of self discovery; to enable you to examine your life and make new meaningful choices within it. I offer counselling to adults and young people, meeting face-to-face when COVID regulations permit and by telephone and online, which enables those at a geographic distance to connect with me. I also work for Aberdeen University offering counselling and facilitating psychoeducational workshops to the wider university community.

How can I find a therapist in Aberdeen?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
