Hello. I'm Dr Rachel Attfield, an HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist. I have experience in working with people with a range of psychological issues. Since 2007, I have worked with people who are living with physical health conditions (including life limiting diagnoses). Such diagnoses can impact how someone feels emotionally and it can be important to think about the interaction between physical and mental health. In addition to this, I have experience working with a range of different presentations, including trauma, OCD , depression and people struggling to make the changes that they want in life.

Hello there, my name is Christophe and I'm a qualified person centred, Emotion Focused therapist (EFT) with extra qualifications in EMDR. I provide a safe, non-judgmental environment so you will be free to express yourself in a way you can't elsewhere. It's natural for us to get stuck in our emotions left over from something in the past. I'll help you pay closer attention to your emotions as they're experienced in session, in order to gain insight into unhelpful emotional learnings and to experience growth through safely because our emotions can help us identify your needs in life, giving you the motivation to move forward

Hi, I’m Teri. I offer relaxed, non-judgmental counselling tailored to your needs. My flexible approach allows me to provide immediate tools for managing anxiety, stress, overwhelm, or low mood, and I can teach relaxation techniques if needed. I also help you understand the root causes of these challenges, so you can recognise and address them in the future. Sometimes, we simply need a safe space to talk, and I’m here for that too. With compassion, sensitivity, and a little humour, I’m committed to supporting you through life’s challenges.

I help strong, capable, and dependable individuals - the ones everyone relies on - who carry their own needs and everyone else’s on their shoulders. From the outside they appear resilient and in control, but inside they are often exhausted. I offer a space where they no longer have to “handle it” alone.

Through one-to-one therapy I can support you to understand and confront the particular areas of difficulty in your life. Perhaps you have noticed an increased level of stress or anxiety, or you find yourself caught up in repetitive patterns that are unhelpful. You could be struggling emotionally, perhaps due to loss or relationship problems, or you may feel you have become stuck and unable to move forward in your life. Whatever the issue, therapy can help you reach a deeper understanding of your experience, the feelings around it, and what might be holding you back.

My clients are people seeking a calm, accepting space to explore relationship issues, neurodivergence, identity questions including LGBTQ+, grief, trauma, anxiety, or overwhelm who value a relationally focused collaborative approach that adapts to their needs. Their goals often include easing distress or stuckness, understanding patterns, finding ways forward and steadiness during times of transition, and feeling more connected to themselves and others. Above all, they want to feel seen, supported, and able to grow at their own pace with a therapist who meets them with warmth, curiosity and respect.

Many people experience low moods, feeling something is not quite “right” and not sure why. Others feel overwhelmed with their own feelings, or something life changing happened, all your feelings are spinning and you need space to process what has happened to you. When this is affecting your quality of life, then it’s time to seek therapy. Life can be incredibly tough at times , and in our most challenging moments it can be difficult to reach out to those around us for help, you may not be able, or you may not want to worry your family/friends. Do you need someone to talk to? Whatever you are struggling with, I am here to help.

Hi, I'm Emma, an integrative, person centred psychotherapist. Coming from a background in peri-nataI mental health I'm passionate about working with themes connected to the family such as birth trauma, generational trauma, childhood trauma, attachment issues, low self esteem, late autism/ADHD diagnosis, fertility issues and baby loss. This involves working with mind and body to rediscover a sense of your true authentic self, to find understanding and identify patterns of behaviour or obstacles preventing you from being the best version of yourself. Collaboratively this could result in an acceptance of self and deeper connections.

I am an integrative psychotherapist and work with individuals aged 18+ for both short-term and open-ended therapy. People seek therapy for different reasons. Often it is because they feel stuck, stressed, overwhelmed or hurt. You might be struggling with a relationship, coping with stress or hoping to change a behaviour that is not working for you. When things are difficult, a psychotherapist can support you and help you to grow in whichever way is right for you. I won't tell you what to do, but I will support you to find a way forward for yourself. I am accredited by the UKCP and a member of the BACP.

Hi, I’m Anne. It's nice to meet you. I’m an Integrative Counsellor with over 25 years’ experience supporting people in wellbeing and development roles across higher education, the NHS and in community settings. Everyone’s situation is unique, and no list can ever capture all the reasons someone might come to counselling. The areas below reflect some of the experiences I often support people with. You don’t need to fit neatly into them. If you’re feeling stuck, weighed down, or unsure, we can explore things together and find a way forward that feels right for you.

Hi my work with children and young people has enabled me to adopt a common sense approach. I practise Integrative Counselling, that means I use CBT, Person Centred, Pyschodynamic, etc, concepts. Which are the building blocks of thoughts and beliefs which affect how we feel. I understand the first step in seeking counselling is hard, if you have sought support, you may not know how to effect change it’s at this point we explore choices.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
