Our relationship is key. I aim to get to know you over time, but for now, here's a bit about me so you can decide whether to make contact. My practice - www.blokecounselling.com - is for anyone who finds it easier to talk with a bloke. It also describes my style: straight-talking and free from buzzwords. Together, we can explore / understand what’s happened to you and the impact this might have had (rather than be told what’s 'wrong' with you). I've worked in The City (with lots of time in former Soviet Union) and was once described as a corporate, rugby-playing, beer-swilling pig. There's clearly a gentler side to me though.
A career break led to 10 years living in a mud hut in Botswana. I set up a project for a community hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Long-term illness, bereavement, trauma etc was commonplace and experiencing this on a daily basis has grounded me well. I've also worked with male survivors of abuse, individuals coping with cancer etc but choose not to specialise.
Being aware that there is something on your mind / causing distress and then acknowledging it is often the first hurdle. And the biggest hurdle. Thinking about making contact is more intense than the reality of making contact. It is a massive step that will be respected and treated with the dignity it deserves. Shall we chat..?
