We can all find life hard at times. It can throw up difficulties that feel overwhelming and out of our control. I support adults and teenagers through a range of issues including anxiety, depression, bereavement, relationship issues and Asperger Syndrome. When we experience distress, sadness, loneliness, anxiety or depressed mood, it can feel difficult to bear and leave us feeling powerless. Working alongside a therapist means you need not face these difficulties alone.

SPACEStherapy is a trauma-informed and trauma-specialist, integrative psychotherapy service. We can offer therapy that works directly with traumatic experiences, and some of our therapists can offer EMDR. But we also understand that for many clients, 'going into' past traumas is not helpful or neccessary. We are experienced in working in a trauma-informed way, which means that we work with an awareness of potential or actual trauma in a client's past, but understand that this does not necessarily need to be the focus of your therapy.

From time to time we all have difficulties, whether due to relationship or family issues, bereavement, or childhood experiences for example. Sometimes we may feel overwhelmed with anxious feelings and unhelpful thoughts, or become stuck in unhealthy relationships or patterns of behaviour. I will work face to face or online for as long or short a time as you need, to explore whatever is causing concern or distress in your life. Counselling can help you find healthier coping strategies when experiencing difficult emotions; or feel more confident to make more helpful choices to benefit your health and wellbeing.

Are you experiencing a difficult or challenging time in your life? Perhaps you are feeling stuck and unable to move forward? Whatever your reason for considering therapy and viewing my profile, it is often the case that we 'hit the wall' or 'crash' emotionally before we can identify that we may need professional support. When our usual coping mechanisms no longer work the struggle can be overwhelming. As your therapist I recognise this as your first and critical step toward positive change. You are, I'm sure, familiar with the phrase 'if you do what you've always done...you get what you've always got' and how true it is.....

With over 15 years experience, every single client I worked with was ideal to me, as being unique, with his/her story, difficulties, weaknesses but also strengths. At times clients come to therapy with a specific goal, other times they do not have a clue, and this is part of the process. If a client is now reading my profile, he/she may be struggling with a recent or more long-standing emotional distress, not able to sleep, concentrate, work, relate to others, etc. He/she may be worrying about what to say to a psychologist; what to expect; possibly fearful of being judged, not understood; if the psychologist would be good enough...

You've reached this page for many reasons, from being diagnosed with a mental health problem to feeling stuck and unable to progress in particular areas of life. I work from the premise that you are an active participant in therapy and hold choice and responsibility in how you want to move forward, whether this includes making sense of, accepting and processing things that have happened to you, or developing existing skills and building new strategies to cope with life's challenges.

Most people at some point in their lives will struggle with painful feelings or may feel overwhelmed by past or present experiences. These can make us feel lost, anxious, confused, helpless, distressed or angry, sometimes without us knowing why. Counselling is also not just for supporting people through a crisis. Many people come to counselling to explore and get a better understanding of themselves and their lives. Whatever you are experiencing, it can be difficult to explain how we feel to the people who are closest to us. Sometimes it is easier to talk to someone who is separate from your everyday life.

I would like to offer you a safe, confidential, non-judgemental, neutral space to work through difficult feelings, gain insights and help you move forward. Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
