I incorporate this experience with my counselling training (Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Integrative Counselling) and work in a way that is relational, safe, kind, and present.
I work with adults offering counselling for all manner of issues that may be causing distress, confusion, grief or a feeling of being stuck. The counselling relationship is one where we start to feel safe enough to begin to be able to notice and explore our situation from different perspectives. This can be a relief, and transformative in so many ways.

As a relational therapist I aim to provide a safe space where the clients' past and current relationships can be explored, understood and improved.
Do you or your young person feel stressed, anxious or overwhelmed? Are you finding it hard to cope with the demands of everyday life? Coming to see a counsellor is a brave step towards making a change. What if you felt calmer and more in control? What difference would that make? If any of this sounds familiar you may benefit from counselling. I believe the potential is within you, but sometimes hard to find or access. Counselling is a form of healing and I believe the relationship between a therapist and client can help you move towards better ways of coping, improving self-confidence, self-worth and living a more fulfilling life.

I am happy to talk with you about anything that bothers you, both relational and sexual.
I'm a Relationship and Couples Counsellor because I believe - and I know from my own experience - that the impact of either a nourishing or a difficult, draining relationship affects our whole lives and how much we are able to engage with the world as our best selves. A crisis, an ongoing difficulty, or just loss of connection can make us feel hopeless and stuck and our sense of well-being is lost. Feeling hopeless with your intimate and sexual relationship can feel lonely and isolating. I will create a safe and unbiased space in which to explore what you are longing for and what is keeping you from having the relationship you want.

I provide a range of evidence based psychotherapies to alleviate psychological distress in Devon, my main approach being Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). Intensive Short term Dynamic Psychotherapy is a highly effective form of psychodynamic psychotherapy designed to help you get to the heart of the matter quickly, and resolve issues fast. The approach is emotion focussed; a relational therapy that can address a wide range of ongoing problems or symptoms. ISTDP is particularly useful in attending to internal conflicts that can arise from interpersonal relationships.

I am an experienced Adult Psychotherapist (Psychoanalytic / Psychodynamic ) and will often work with clients who have experienced severe and complex trauma or difficult relational issues, particularly where these have arisen in childhood and continue to be problematic in later life.
I believe that our capacity to cope with issues that arise in adult life, whether this is how we experience the world, relate to others, cope with difficult situations or understand and manage what can often be overwhelming emotions, is ultimately bound up with our early experiences. Whether we wish to or not we carry our history with us and sometimes this does not provide the strong foundation needed to engage and embrace life or weather its storms. I work with clients to recognise the origins of their difficulties so that together we might arrive at a place where life is understandable, and they feel both validated and valued.

I take a supportive Relational approach using a TA ( Transactional Analysis) framework to help clients work through emotional and psychological difficulties in their life.
If you are feeling lost, overwhelmed and unsupported coming to talk with me could be really helpful. Many feel their difference leads to isolation and even external aggression, causing them to withdraw even further. Speaking with a counsellor/psychotherapist such as myself can offer perspective and provide clarity at a time when things seem confused and chaotic.

Are you looking for the 'right' counsellor? Hi, my name is Lizette and I believe we each have an innate ability to know what is right for our personal situation. But sometimes, due to either loss, trauma, bereavement, abuse, adverse events from our childhood or a life changing event, we lose our direction. Given the right environment, including a safe space to be heard, I can give you time to explore your needs for healing, change and growth. You’ve already made the first step, the next step begins with you trusting your instinct and making the connection that feels right to you.

It's natural to feel a little bit hesitant or nervous when looking for someone to talk to. It's a big step.  If you're reading this, you've already made that step into looking into your options. That's something in itself.  When, or if, you feel that you are ready to contact someone. Know that I hold a safe space and a listening ear. My aim? To give you space to put out the fires and create more space for the process of change to begin.

Relational Counsellors

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioural therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
