If you're feeling depressed or anxious and can't seem to shift this state of mind no matter what you try, or you feel like you can't get control of your 'self' in some fundamental way, then you might like to try IFS therapy. This gives clients a model for working with their own minds which can be used both in therapy and in daily life. It puts you easily back in the driving seat – and after years of feeling that there's nothing you can do about the moods that tend to sweep over you, that can be a huge relief.

You as a human being, you have a choice. And you can choose. You can choose to gain victory over yourself—or you can choose to try to pursue, for the rest of your life, trying to gain victory over your problems. In one, you will never win—in one you’ve got a fair shot. Prem Rawat

I have worked as an integrative psychotherapist for more than twenty years and this experience has taught me that it is the quality of relationship, both with ourselves and others, that is the key to a rich sense of wellbeing. Addressing issues in relationships that arise from traumatic events in childhood and/or adulthood creates opportunities for change and sows the seeds of hope and joy. I am known for my deeply empathic approach and the ability to hear my clients’ stories without judgment, which allows them to express both the lows and the highs of their lives. My training and experience have deepened my insight and understand

Change and choice can be challenging. Making the decision to enter into counselling can be one of the most difficult steps we ever take. Maybe you are managing to function, but struggling to cope? It can really help to talk freely and confidentially with someone whose life and relationships are totally separate from yours. With impartial help and support, to express yourself and review your beliefs and decisions, you will be able to clarify your thoughts and feelings. It can then become easier to make sense of what is happening.

People who are keen to re-orientate their lives in the direction of their values - towards what gives them a sense of meaning and purpose. Having a clearer idea of what really matters helps people motivate themselves - even to the extent of accepting the difficulties it may entail - to either change or persist - in behaviours that will move them in their valued directions. Typically, this approach can be powerfully effective in dealing with the pervasive problems of stress, anxiety and depression and other chronic issues where rigid patterns of avoidant behaviour have developed.

You know something isn’t right in your life, but you don’t quite know where to begin to get help. Maybe the idea of speaking with somebody feels a little daunting, or you’re concerned you won’t be able to find the words, or they won’t understand where you’re coming from. This is absolutely normal, and is what most people feel before the call a therapist to get help. Even if you’ve been to counselling and psychotherapy before, the thought of explaining your story yet again might fill you with dread. What you could really do with is somebody that gets it, that you can feel comfortable with, that can help you feel understood, quickly.

My aim is to help you identify and explore defence mechanisms that unconsciously crept into your life and create a trusted bond essential to build awareness of the both, self-destructive relational patterns as well as unfulfilled needs.
There are things that you might find yourself struggling with, such as, trying to seek meaning and purpose in life, work problems, relationship difficulties, addiction or mourning the losses and changes that are happening to our planet. You might be feeling adrift in a rapidly changing world, alone, cut off from others or caught in a trap and doing things that you do not find fulfilling anymore. Perhaps you are angry, anxious, depressed or having thoughts of suicide and you are unsure of how to cope with these feelings. Let’s create together a space where mutual understanding and trust is highly valued.

Relational Counsellors

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioural therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
