Through our lives, we may have experiences and feelings that are difficult to make sense of and which would benefit from talking about with someone outside of our day-to-day life. Talking to a counsellor can feel like a daunting prospect, but in taking that next step you can give yourself the time, support and guidance you need to explore and understand the roots of these feelings and enable yourself to find new ways of relating that are fulfilling and enriching.

I work as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and I have consulting rooms in Central London and North London. I have more than 30 years’ experience of working in the NHS as well as in independent practice. In my experience people seek therapy for many different reasons. They may be facing a predicament, be anxious, depressed or confused, or feel stuck in repeating patterns of thoughts and behaviour that have adverse effects on their lives. They may have relationship difficulties or questions about their sexuality; they may be finding it difficult to deal with the loss of a person, a position or an identity.

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you’re feeling out of sorts and would like some help and support to feel better. Sometimes life can throw us a curve ball that leaves us feeling overwhelmed or maybe you’ve had enough of feeling depressed and anxious, angry or sad. Perhaps you’re tired of repeating certain patterns of behaviour or relationships that leave you feeling empty and disappointed. I recognise it takes a lot of courage to seek help. My role is to help you understand better why you sometimes feel, think, or behave the way you do. With that knowledge in hand, you can begin to make positive changes in your life.

I have trained in existential psychotherapy, and I apply this in my work with clients. The starting point is the experience of the client, to provide the opportunity for them to examine their understanding of life, and the problems and dilemmas they face; to reassess their goals and desires. It provides an opportunity to consider how their choices have been constrained, perhaps by the views and expectations of others, but also by constraints rooted in our society. Understanding can lead to questioning, and growth, possibly in new directions.

I believe that we tend to access therapy when it’s no longer possible for us to travel alone on our journey, hidden from ourselves and others, stuck in familiar and/or unfamiliar patterns that can no longer contain us, and when the way in which we are relating (or not relating) to ourselves, others and the world around us, is no longer making us feel fully alive. Something tells us it's time to look inwards. Looking inwards can feel daunting but it is necessary in order to instigate meaningful and lasting changes ( both external and internal ).

We seek therapy for many reasons. I welcome anything you wish to bring from anxiety, to trauma, grief, ptsd, shame and life crisis or indeed the difficulties you may have faced within this last year and a half. I offer a safe space to explore your current life struggles. I will walk by your side as you uncover a greater sense of ease, self understanding and indeed joy. We will find the repeating limiting themes you encounter and work to understand them and reintegrate the parts that suffered and froze along the way. I endeavour to provide a secure base for you to experience.

Would you like to feel more together? Have more energy? Feel less up and down? Traumatic events, especially from childhood, can emotionally overwhelm us. If we can't make sense of them (which is usually easier with another mind) then we store the emotions in our body until we can. We try to avoid feeling what we can't tolerate, so we protect ourselves, which leads to behaviours we'd like to change and depression. Then, little by little, these old feelings begin to demand our attention. They need to be turned into into words, so that we can make the feelings we are avoiding more bearable. Can I help you do this?

I am very mindful of how difficult finding a therapist that you feel comfortable with can be and I offer a calm and compassionate approach, while we gain an understanding of your concerns. My primary therapeutic method is ‘psychodynamic’ but I draw on a variety of ‘models’ to help in whichever way is appropriate: These may include CBT or EFT. Once we have revealed, talked-through and understood the root causes of your concerns we can examine ways of dealing with the issues and moving forward. This is a very much a joint effort where we work together to help you through the troublesome episode and out the other side.

There can be times in life where you might feel like the world is a hard place to navigate, often due to relational difficulties. These could derive from a number of different sources that can range from a change of circumstances to daunting past events. You might feel like you’re overwhelmed by emotions, uncertain of their origins and lacking a strategy to manage them. While therapy cannot alter your current circumstances or erase past traumas, it can empower you to build resilience, helping you navigate and grow through life's struggles. The goal is to guide you towards a more fulfilling and joyful life.

I specialise in anxiety and depression, but whatever brings you to therapy right now I can support you and together we can explore what is the cause. I am passionate about empowering clients to develop and strengthen their own sense of agency in the world, so that they feel in control. I work collaboratively with clients rather than acting as an expert. I help my clients consider new ways of viewing the world and guidance on ways they may consider changing their behaviours. The most important thing to me as a therapist is that I provide a warm and non-judgemental space for you to feel truly seen, heard and understood.

I'm a clinical psychologist offering individual therapy for adults. I appreciate how hard it can be to start working with a new therapist, and prioritise creating a trusting working relationship where difficulties can be discussed without shame or judgement. I continue to work in the NHS as a senior psychologist, and have several years of experience working with people across the lifespan facing a range of difficulties.

I offer a warm, non judgemental space which allows you to examine issues around health and stress, relationships, anxiety, workplace issues, self confidence, trauma and stuck behavioural patterns. I work consistently with clients on issues around addictive behaviours and work with individuals and groups in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse. No problem is ever too small and it is often the ones you feel embarrassed to bring that are key to unlocking the problem.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in London?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
