Psychodynamic Counselling is known to be particularly effective at treating depression and other serious psychological disorders, especially in those who have lost meaning in their lives.
I aim to instil an overall sense of mental wellbeing and health; to help clients work through past traumas by showing them a different, more positive way of understanding them; and to free individuals from long held anxieties so they can maintain better relationships and live a happier life. Alongside Private Practice, I work for the NHS as the Health and Wellbeing Practitioner at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire, offering onsite counselling to staff members. Prior to re-training as a Counsellor, I worked for 14 years in the Financial Sector and so have plenty of knowledge and understanding of the Corporate world.

I integrate approaches such as Psychodynamic, including Attachment Based Psychotherapy, Transactional Analysis, Internal Family Systems and Compassionate Inquiry.
I am a BACP Accredited counsellor. I help people have better relationships with themselves and those around them. So, does life is feel overwhelming, your relationships feel strained or are breaking down, you feel anxious, depressed, angry, lost or stuck, or do you have an inner voice that is really mean? Therefore, because of all this do your relationships keep ending the same way, do you keep feeling the same old feelings or engage in behaviours that are harmful? Do you need help to begin to make sense of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, other people and even the world?

I am a highly qualified and experienced counsellor and psychotherapist, I work with adults, adolescents and children from the age of 5. My approach, though rooted in psychodynamic practice, can be adapted to suit your personal requirements. As a Psychodynamic Counsellor, I work with you to bring understanding to your current day anxieties, fears and beliefs. I explore your unconscious internal belief structures and try to help you make links between these and your current-day feelings and any reoccurring patterns in your life.

If you are at a point in life where you feel stuck or at a point of crisis, and it's preventing your ability to enjoy things as you have normally, you may be needing some extra help to find a way forward. Or if one or more of your relationships with others is becoming difficult, and you don't know why, then this can indicate you are struggling. If your inner world is feeling desperate or muddled and too difficult to manage alone, then counselling can be a positive step in trying to change that. To sit and explore your story and feelings with someone can be powerful in unblocking difficult feelings and to understand what you need.

I use a variety of models and techniques in my day to day practice including motivational interviewing, CBT, ACT, psychodynamic and relational attachment based approaches.
I work with adults using a holistic approach who are feeling stuck. Many people since COVID are struggling with depression, stress, anxiety, and burnout. Some people are turning to alcohol, drugs or other addictive behaviours to cope. Its ok to find life hard. I specialise in working with people who are worrying they aren’t managing their mental health, who may have experienced trauma, and may be self-medicating. I offer an entirely non-judgemental, confidential, compassionate and safe space to talk about some of these things and help you to identify what changes you would like to make. I also specialise in working with ADHD.

I specialise in providing psychological therapy online through video chat, telephone, email and instant messaging. As human beings we experience a wide array of emotions and often many struggles. Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
