I am a BACP Registered psychodynamic therapist, specialising in Internal Family Systems’ (IFS) therapy.
Are you living with the symptoms of emotional ‘trauma’, distressing memories and emotional triggers? Is this making life, work and relationships more difficult? Perhaps you experience flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, panic, phobias, anger? We can use Internal Family Systems' therapy with EMDR therapy to compassionately engage with your self. We can befriend your troubled 'parts' and unburden them of their jobs. I use a somatic trauma-informed approach to your therapy, i have worked as a clinical specialist in the NHS and have a great deal of experience, particularly with relationship difficulties, obsessions, and complex cases.

I have an MSc in psychosexual therapy and a post graduate diploma in psychodynamic individual and couple counselling.
Relationships can at times be a great source of distress and anxiety; sometimes it’s easy to feel stuck and unable to move forwards. You may be having difficulties with communication, infidelity, intimacy, sexual difficulties, or perhaps you just can’t seem to get along anymore and you’re not sure why. Whether you are experiencing difficulties within your relationship, or find it difficult to form lasting relationships, counselling can give you the space you need to explore and understand these issues. I offer sex therapy and relationship/couple counselling from my base in Canterbury (Kent) and online.

My practice is based in Person Centred and Psychodynamic training as well as drawing inspiration from existential philosophy.
I provide the space for you to make the changes you want. Where you can talk through your thoughts, feelings, experiences and concerns, free from judgement. For some, this is in a therapy room and for others this can be outdoors. You choose the space to suit you. I focus on helping you to heal and re-energise. To become aware of personal strengths and also the barriers that may be holding you back. Together we work on how you can move forward with new knowledge and skills to live a more authentic and meaningful life going forward. To help you grow from your struggles, heal from your pain, and move forward to where you want to be.

I particularly draw from psychodynamic, attachment based and internal family systems models.
I am committed to helping others process distressing or troubling experiences or work out how they can feel happier or more at ease in their lives. I have plentiful experience working with anxiety and depression, trauma, those who hear voices and those who are experiencing a mental health crisis, as well as particular experience working with university age adults. I will work collaboratively with you, but believe that you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to be alongside you to provide compassionate support and a gentle challenge where appropriate to help you unpack things in a warm and non-judgemental space.

My integrative approach includes the warmth of the person-centred relationship, the depth of the psychodynamic therapies, and the pragmatic solution focus of CBT, depending on what you need.
We all face times in our lives when we feel lost, anxious, and overwhelmed. We may find it hard to get out of bed in the morning, or feel like no-one will understand what we are going through. Sometimes intense memories of a loss or a traumatic event in our past may be hindering us from moving forward, creating painful patterns in our day to day lives. Perhaps we just feel that something is 'off' and sense that we are not living our lives in the most fulfilling and meaningful way possible. I am a qualified Integrative counsellor trained to work with adults and young people, and want to help you find a way forward.

I have extensive experience working with anxiety, PTSD, relationship difficulties and depression and with Men´s issues. Maybe you feel a general sense of not being happy or fulfilled, as if you can´t get your life on track. Often it is helpful to understand our current difficulties through exploring past experiences and how they may have impacted upon you - you may like to do this but you may prefer not to think too much about the past. Everyone is different. The therapy process I offer is safe, confidential and structured to support you in the way that feels safest to you to make the changes you are longing for.

Psycho-dynamically and group-analytically trained, I believe that a good deal of trauma, depression and anxiety originate in childhood experience, often unacknowledged by others if not by the distressed person. This includes separation, loss and bereavement, sexual and physical abuse. These experiences need exploration alongside a trained practitioner. In a confidential therapy group, which is for sitting down and talking, each member of up to 8, takes part by talking, listening, feeling and responding, building trust, with a boundary observed of no social contact beyond group sessions. We use only first names.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
