Welcome. Life can be tough. Sometimes we simply need to talk with someone who can listen without judgement; who does not 'give advice' but holds the space for personal reflection, growth and development. As a registered and accredited member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP), I am an independent, experienced and professional counsellor / psychotherapist, an approved Adoption counsellor and qualified in EMDR therapy. I work with young people and adults, including couples and families, across such issues as anxiety, bereavement, depression, relationships and trauma.

Starting therapy can be daunting so it’s important that you identify a therapist and an approach to working that feels right for you. As an art psychotherapist, I am open, honest and inclusive with considerable experience supporting children, adolescents and young adults in schools and community settings. My approach to working is psychodynamic - I’m interested in how past events may have affected you, both consciously and unconsciously, influencing the way you think, feel and behave. Should talking about your experiences be too difficult, I may encourage you to try different creative techniques as an alternate means of expression.

The way I work is based on a Psychodynamic approach to Psychotherapy.
There are times when we may struggle to cope or sense our life is stuck and feel powerless to change it. Taking the first steps towards finding the support and help you need is a courageous and important act, so please know that whatever issues bring you here, you will be heard. Counselling can help you to explore your inner world, make significant changes to your life and find your true self. I am a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) and adhere to the Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.

I am an integrative counsellor, working from a person-centred perspective while incorporating psychodynamic insights and CBT principles where relevant.
There are many reasons why we may find ourselves considering accessing counselling support throughout our lives. You may have a clear sense of the support you are looking for and the difficulties you are facing. Alternatively, you may just feel in your gut that something is not right. Perhaps you are realising that having a better understanding of yourself, your relationships and the impact of your environment would help you live a more fulfilled life. I am experienced in working with a wide range of issues from anxiety, stress, trauma and grief to confusing thoughts, life transitions, depression and difficulties in relationships.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I look at how past relationships and traumas may be affecting how you are feeling or coping with at the present time.
You may be experiencing anxiety or depression. This could be due to the impact of past experiences or trauma, or it could be that you are going through a period of change or transition. This may lead to feelings that can be punishing and confusing to cope with by yourself. I offer a non-judgmental and compassionate space where you can explore and express your feelings however difficult they may feel.

As an integrative practitioner, I am trained in three main therapeutic approaches - person-centred, psychodynamic & CBT.
Hi, I’m Kathryn – a qualified Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist. We all face times in our life when things feel less than easy. For some, a particular aspect of life may feel overwhelming. For others, their entire situation may feel desperate. Some may simply feel that they want an opportunity to understand themselves better, to be the ‘best’ that they can be. Whatever your current experience, Counselling & Psychotherapy gives you the opportunity to ‘unpack’ what is happening for you with a qualified individual, held safely, and in confidence.

I specialise in two distinct therapeutic disciplines, namely: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy which enables me to work with clients seeking transformational change and support with deeper rooted, trauma related or life long challenges; and Cognitive, Behavioural and Motivational Therapies exploring issue-specific or outcomes focussed therapeutic change.
When we find ourselves in a place where our thoughts, feelings or behaviours are impacting upon our daily lives, counselling and psychotherapy sessions offer an opportunity to understand why this is happening, make positive changes for the better, and move forward to where we want to be.

I call on psychodynamic and relational theories to inform how we work together.
Deciding to go to therapy, and finding the right therapist can be a daunting and difficult process. My aim is to make that as easy as possible for you and I offer a free, initial first session of 30 minutes for you to test the waters and figure out if I feel like the right therapist for you. You may be struggling with something specific that has interrupted your life, or perhaps there is something in your past that you are ready to understand now. Feeling emotionally overwhelmed can be a lonely place and often it will impact your relationships, work-life and wellbeing.

I am aware that many people communicate on a very superficial level, frightened they may be judged, won’t be liked, or don’t fit in. I fully believe we all deserve to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. By talking with me, I hope you will discover your full and true potential, which may enable you to make healthier choices and create positive changes. I am passionate about my work and consider it both a responsibility and a privilege to be actively engaged in my client’s exploration of their life and I offer you my full commitment and dedication

I am an experienced and fully qualified therapeutic counsellor for children and adolescents aged 4-19 years old, and provide counselling in a confidential, non judgemental and safe setting. My therapy room is based in Farnborough and I am able to offer support and relief from the overwhelming and anxious feelings that can leave a child or adolescent feeling vulnerable. I have found that through the therapy process, children and young people can develop their communication skills and confidence levels, as well as learning how to cope with difficult feelings.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
