I am a Muslim therapist who understands your struggles to find a counsellor who you can connect with and show your true self to. I want you to be able to share your positive and negative experiences so we can work together through your difficulties. Although therapy can be challenging, I am here to listen and support you through your journey, even if this means repeating the same situation multiple times. If it matters to you, it matters to me. I am here to work collaboratively with you at your pace, and to support your self-development. We will work holistically, taking into consideration your views, background, and experience.

As a BACP accredited counsellor with over 16 years experience, I support people through depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, abuse, loss amongst many other issues. Having a confidential space to talk, a space just for you, can start you on the path to making positive changes. Each person's journey differs so I aim to explore it with you, adapting my skills to fit your needs. I believe each of us have the ability to enhance our lives, sometimes we just need a little help along the way. Taking that first step to meet a counsellor requires courage; I understand this and aim to make it as easy as possible.

There is so much focus these days on "What's wrong with you" using terms such as 'depression', 'anxiety', 'disorder', rather than talking about "What happened to you?" Your mental health is much more than just a label or a diagnosis and therapy offers so much more than just talking. It can give you new understanding, new insights, a different perspective, clarity about a problem and the way forward. It can teach you skills to live your life better, teach you more healthy coping strategies or simply give you the space and time for self reflection and a place to find peace of mind.

Sometimes the issues we face paralyse us with anxieties. Sometimes we have no one in our lives who are able to help or we may not want to burden others. It’s difficult to trust people with our innermost worries, feelings and thoughts. Yet we all need help to get through difficult periods in our lives. It may be that friends and family tell us to stop dwelling on the past or try and move on. But no matter how hard we try, the past hangs around to haunt us or we have no words to describe what we feel. Additionally, we may wish to explore our experience for personal or professional reasons.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
