Everyone needs a little support from time to time. Perhaps you or someone you know feel that you ought to be able to manage your feelings, but are finding them too much at the moment. You may be feeling overwhelmed, sad, anxious, angry or confused. The demands of work, relationships, families, financial worries, or caring for someone can all make it difficult to cope. You may have experienced loss through bereavement, redundancy, or retirement, or you might be struggling with your sense of identity, self-confidence, health, or direction in home life or at work. You may feel that you are struggling with some other unique issue.

I work in a psychoanalytic tradition that thinks of our conscious choices and actions as being linked to unconscious processes.
Are you experiencing anxiety or depression and want to explore their possible cause? Have you experienced trauma and are struggling to deal with its consequences? Do you find relationships difficult? These are some of the questions that I explore in my work with clients, drawing upon my ongoing training at the Society for Social and Critical Psychoanalysis (UKCP Registered), my four years of training in psychotherapy, my three decades of experience in Communications and Crisis Management, and my professional engagement with psychological issues across race, gender and orientation in the USA, China and France.

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist based in Wokingham. My approach is psychoanalytic - this kind of therapy is based on the idea that what we experience as a difficulty in the present may point to an unconscious problem with roots in the past. You may find you are struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, self-destructive behaviour or difficulties in relationships and want to have a better understanding of what underpins these issues.

While there are many different approaches to psychotherapy and counselling, I work principally within the psychoanalytic tradition, a key part of which is to work in collaboration with clients to try to understand the unconscious origins of difficulties affecting our lives in the present. The aim is not to give advice, but to support people who have reached a point in their lives where they feel themselves to be facing difficult, sometimes confusing feelings and states of mind, to offer a reliable place to come and be listened to, without fear of being judged, criticised or told what to do.

I offer medium and long-term psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy, a multifaceted professional experience and a solid engagement with different schools of psychotherapy over 14 years.
I've been working with people for over 20 years, joining them in sense-making journeys that allow them to live more content and meaningful lives. My focus is to help people explore their thoughts, emotions and past to alleviate difficult states or obstacles to their wellbeing. When people understand what drives their behaviour and reconnect with lost parts of themselves, they can reengage in positive relationships and feel they can own their life. Symptoms like anxiety, depression or a sense of futility and unhappiness are usually linked to past experience and therapy can facilitate a safe frame to revisit them.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a process that involves talking openly and honestly about your experiences and feelings, and exploring what they mean in the context of your past, your present, and your desires now and for the future.
My aim is to create a safe and confidential space in which you can explore your concerns and increase your self-understanding at your own pace and according to your individual needs. A secure therapeutic relationship, directed by what you want to bring to each session, is central to that process.

Are you seeking a space to unpack thoughts and feelings which feel hard to voice? Trying to find more capacity to understand and encounter yourself and others more deeply? Therapy offers a confidential space in which you can speak about your life’s journey, as well as what occupies your thoughts today. This can involve exploring the anxieties, relationships, dreams and experiences which are most significant for you. I practice psychoanalytic psychotherapy: this will not give you tools or advice - instead it will help you understand the parts of yourself which may feel hidden, troubling and confusing.

I draw from different approaches, humanistic and psychoanalytic to better suit the needs of the client.
You may or may not know in advance what the source of your difficulties may be. Part of our process is to explore together what has led you here. Every person is different. Amid the stresses of daily life, it’s easy to lose touch with our own deepest needs and feelings – until they become too painful or persistent to ignore.

Psychoanalytic Counsellors
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviours. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behaviour is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
