Hi, I'm Paul Robinson, a Psychotherapist based in Preston, Lancashire. If you are looking for a therapist who will just listen and nod, I may not be the right fit. I offer an actively engaged, direct, and robust approach, designed for clients who are ready to move past simply understanding their life and into real, practical change. Therapy with me isn't about solving an abstract problem; it's about shifting patterns of relating. The way you connect with me in the room often mirrors the problems you face outside of it. I'm here to serve as a critical friend: warm and supportive, yet challenging when needed.

Something has to give. Maybe you've hit a wall. Maybe you're exhausted in a way sleep doesn't fix. Maybe a relationship ended, or didn't end, or changed you in ways you're still making sense of. Maybe you just woke up one day and realised you have no idea who you are underneath all the roles you play. Whatever brought you here, you're done pretending it's fine. I work with people who are ready to be honest with themselves. People who feel deeply, who've spent a long time making themselves smaller, who are somewhere in the process of waking up to themselves and can't go back to how things were.

I am a graduate in Transactional Analysis Integrative Psychotherapy. Through this mode of psychotherapy, an understanding and awareness of why we are the way we are can assist us to grow, develop and change the narrative that may be keeping you stuck or struggling to navigate life, feelings, behaviours and relationships. I have been a practicing Registered Mental Health Nurse for almost 30 years now and through my experience of working diagnostically within the mental health system, I have come to recognise that beneath the labels and diagnoses, there are the experiences of life that only you have had.

I believe you strive to want to do what's best for you, no matter what conditions you may find yourself in. I believe in the uniqueness of each individual and that you have the capacity to be the expert in your own world, as only you know how you truly feel, and what you really want. You are the only person who can decide who you want to be, and how you want to be living your life. I believe you deserve respect for the values and choices you decide to live by and strongly believe that through the trustworthy relationship I hope to build with you, that together, we will find the path that is hidden from you.

Many of the people who come to therapy are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in patterns that are difficult to shift alone. Some are navigating the impact of past experiences, while others are struggling in relationships, managing stress, or facing significant life changes. Often, they are thoughtful people who have been coping for a long time but are ready to understand themselves more deeply. In therapy, we take time to make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface, helping clients gain insight, develop healthier ways of responding to challenges, & move towards a life that feels more balanced and manageable.

With experience both as a psychotherapist-in-training and client, I regard trust and a safe environment to work through difficulties, identify and express personal needs as high priorities. I therefore offer an empathic, non-judgmental and containing space and work openly with whatever arises from the client's life as well as what arises in the room in a gently challenging manner in order to encourage personal growth. I am in the final stages of a seven year psychotherapy training and use psychodrama and creative approaches in my work and am committed to help people access the often dormant creativity in their lives.

Hello and welcome - I am an experienced, BACP registered person-centred therapist offering counselling in-person or via secure video call. I have extensive experience supporting adults and young people across NHS, educational, and hospice settings, experiencing anxiety, trauma, OCD, bereavement and depression. Sometimes, past experiences or upcoming challenges can feel overwhelming, leaving us feeling stuck and unsure how to move forward. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, low mood, and emotional difficulties that may prevent us from living the life we truly want.

Hi, I’m Leonie (MSc, GMBPsS). I help children and young adults who are struggling with the emotional impact of their parents’ divorce or separation. Divorce doesn’t just end a marriage - it can leave children and young people feeling confused, anxious, or caught in the middle. You may notice changes in mood, behaviour, sleep, or confidence, even if they say they’re “fine.” If your child has changed, that’s often a sign they need support. As a child of divorce myself, I understand these feelings and I’m here to support you. I offer home visits so that young people can feel safe to open up and develop healthy coping skills.

One thing I always say to my clients is that my ultimate goal is to 'make you your own therapist so you don't need me anymore'. I believe my role is to help you: Understand the problem and what is keeping it going. Identify goals for yourself both short term and long term to help give you focus. Learn strategies and techniques that can help you cope better, overcome and make positive changes. Be able to maintain your progress after therapy and reduce the chances or impacts of setbacks in the future. Become more resilient, understanding of good mental heath awareness which could have a positive impact on your relationships.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
