Hi and welcome, I am an experienced Therapist and coach. I work with young adults, adults & elders. Our initial session is to make sure that you are confident with me to continue (there is no obligation to do so) & also for me to understand a little about what brings you to therapy. I have had the privilege to work with many clients with complex issues. I believe the therapeutic relationship is very important. I also invite you to review the therapy regularly to ensure you are getting the most out of the sessions. When appropriate, I work creatively & with humour. If you have any questions please do contact me.

Counselling can be really helpful when you just need someone to talk to and it can offer so much more. When you are feeling like something is just not right or life seems so challenging, talking to a Counsellor can make the difference. Many people just want to feel better and get a sense of relief from the turmoil of life. It may be that a life event has really impacted on you, such as a bereavement, trauma or loss of a job. You may feel like the world just does not understand you or perhaps you are struggling to come to terms with your sexuality. There are many many different reasons why people choose counselling. We're all unique.

Hello, my name is Matthew and I’m a counsellor based at Havant Meeting Place - Havant United Reformed Church. I acknowledge counselling is a brave step to take with initially making the enquiry and then having the courage to attend the first session. I have had counselling in my life and being listened to seemed surreal at first. Friends and family had always given their opinions and reassurances, with the best of intentions at heart, yet being really listened to was ground-breaking for me. I aim to ease any anxiety by arranging an appointment as soon as possible so therapy can begin.

Starting therapy is an important step. It is an opportunity to tackle your immediate concerns but also to understand them in the context of your life in general. It provides a space to creatively shape your life but also take your pain and struggle seriously. Therapy provides an opportunity to strengthen a sense of your own identity and worth and to experiment with how to take that into your relationships, career and life in general.

Are you or a teen you care for going through a tough time? Maybe your child’s behaviour or feelings of overwhelm are causing real difficulties at home or at school? You might be feeling unsupported? Despite being a loving and dedicated parent to your teen, you may be finding you come to blows far more frequently than you would like. You might be feeling exhausted and out of ideas about how to bring peace into your household. If you feel you’ve reached the point where having someone to listen, would help you and your family then I provide a safe, confidential space in which behaviours, feelings and strategies can be explored.

People come to counselling when their life is not going as they want it to be. With sensitive listening, empathy and gentle observation I can help you to become aware of what is troubling you and why. You may be having difficulties in one or more of a wide range of difficulties including anger, anxiety, bereavement, depression, divorce and separation, family issues, guilt, loneliness, injury, loss and grief, low self esteem, relationship issues or stress. I can help you by really listening in a non-judgemental way and supporting you as you listen to yourself, which will lead to greater self-acceptance, understanding and resilience.

Hello, there are many and varied reasons why people seek counselling or therapy with no problem being too big or too small. Modern day life can leave us struggling to balance work, family and relationships resulting in us experiencing feelings of failure, self doubt, low in confidence, feeling overwhelmed, confused, lost, defeated and burnt out. At times we can experience significant change and loss. We can be left with feelings of low mood and anxiety and struggle to make sense of our experience. Maybe we realise that difficult past events or life experiences continue to affect us.

How can I find a therapist in PO9?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
