Life isn’t always straightforward. We go through challenges, experience pain, & sometimes lose sight of who we are. I believe that everything we’ve been through shapes us & by reflecting on our experiences & relationships, we can begin to understand ourselves more deeply. With the right support, healing & growth are possible. As a person-centred counsellor, my focus is on you as a whole person. We all experience life in different ways & therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Some days it might feel like progress & other days like you’re treading water—that’s okay. Change isn’t always linear, but I’ll be here to support you.

My name is Jo and I am a qualified counsellor. I am interested in every client at every stage and transition of their life. Each client is unique. Your reasons for coming to counselling will be yours alone; your story will be unlike anybody else’s, and I will respect that. Life can sometimes be overwhelming. Our feelings about events and relationships – past, present and future – can be bewildering, painful, all-consuming. I will offer you confidential, accepting, empathetic support to resolve whatever brings you to therapy. You hold the answers; our work together will illuminate them.

I provide a range of evidence based psychotherapies to alleviate psychological distress in Devon, my main approach being Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). Intensive Short term Dynamic Psychotherapy is a highly effective form of psychodynamic psychotherapy designed to help you get to the heart of the matter quickly, and resolve issues fast. The approach is emotion focussed; a relational therapy that can address a wide range of ongoing problems or symptoms. ISTDP is particularly useful in attending to internal conflicts that can arise from interpersonal relationships.

There comes a moment - sometimes slowly, sometimes all at once - when we realise something needs attention. A feeling, a pattern, a memory that won’t stay quiet. Counselling is a place where we can listen closely to what’s going on beneath the noise. It’s not about ‘saying the right thing’ - it’s about being together with what’s true, in a space that allows you to breathe a little deeper. Some people come with much to say, others bring silence or nudges that don’t yet make sense. It’s all welcome. For those who feel drawn to it, I also offer therapeutic songwriting sessions.

You might be seeking counselling for recent life challenges or for long term wounds, to change old patterns or to understand yourself better. Being an Integrative Counsellor means we work together in a way that's best for you, to create better awareness, healthier coping strategies and to help you reconnect with yourself. Many of us go through anxiety, depression, loss, traumatic events, low self esteem and much more at some point in our lives. And many of us might have long term feelings, patterns and behaviours that we're struggling to cope with. Together we'll explore with warmth, compassion and understanding.

You may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or carrying more than you can manage alone. Perhaps you’re unsure why things feel so hard, or you’re struggling with emotions, relationships, or life changes that have left you feeling depleted. Therapy can offer a space to pause, reflect, and begin to make sense of what’s happening for you. What makes my work unique is the blend of compassion, experience, and flexibility I bring to each client. I have worked across schools, leadership and clinical roles, and private practice, which allows me to support both immediate difficulties and deeper, long-standing patterns.

Therapy offers a confidential and sacred space to think, feel and to know your true self. It explores your needs, thoughts and feelings associated with those needs as they arise. From this comes clarity and awareness. I think of it as coming out of the dark and into the light. Being truly listened to supports this helping you hear yourself and reveal all that matters to you. Activating the development of inner strength, confidence, resilience, resolve and purpose. You fearlessly open to change when released from the felt wounds you have been carrying, such as sadness, grief, confusion, anger, worry, regret or anxiety.

I endeavour to provide a safe, comfortable, quiet space for clients to explore sensitive issues. The relationship between myself and the client is at the heart of my approach. I believe that being with a client and offering a compassionate holding presence while they share their story is essential to establish a therapeutic working alliance before offering insight and psycho education. I adapt my approach to suit the needs of each client and integrate suitable interventions or tools work with whatever issue the client is presenting.

I see clients (and supervisees) from all backgrounds and specialise in working with men, or women seeking to better understand difficult relationships with men. I work with many issues including stress, feeling sad, low self-esteem, loss and relationship difficulties. My clients often want to change something about themselves and need a place to feel comfortable, share their emotions and better understand their needs. Articulating emotions and needs can be a struggle at first for some and I am experienced in helping clients to open up over time. My work is with individual clients online or in person, both short and long term.

Life can leave you feeling stuck, like you’re holding everything together on the outside while quietly falling apart on the inside. Maybe anxiety, low mood, or past trauma keep showing up just when you think you’ve moved on. You might be exhausted from always being the strong one, or unsure where to start untangling it all. Whatever’s brought you here, you don’t have to face it alone, change is possible, and therapy can help you find calm, confidence, and clarity again.

Hi, I’m Siobhán a counsellor, creative thinker, and expert-level coffee drinker. Therapy doesn’t have to be stiff, scary, or full of awkward silences (though we can do those too, if that’s your thing). I offer a relaxed, down-to-earth space where you can talk or draw, swear, rant, cry, laugh, or just sit and figure stuff out. No judgment, no jargon, no clipboard ticking.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
