Not accepting new clients
I began as an anthropologist, seeking to understand other people's cultures from their own perspectives. Then my desire changed to facilitating direct positive shifts in other people's lives; lives spoilt by trauma, depression, anxiety, abuse, persecuted sexuality and lack of life direction. My work is now with private clients across anxiety and mood problems - generalized anxiety, OCD, PTSD, psychosexual problems and depression. I also work in depth on relationship problems which often link with anxiety. In Islington Mind I worked with LGBT clients including asylum seekers persecuted for their sexuality.
I am an integrative counsellor. This means that I have a major mode of working - client centred- but draw on other traditions where indicated. Where relationships are the focus I will include psychodynamic approaches. Finally, I will take an existential approach to problems of "what do I want to do with my life."
Sometimes counsellor warmth is overemphasised but without it I doubt therapy can be successful. After ten yours in practice I notice quickly the vulnerability of a client. I adjust to this so the client will feel safe with me. Counselling and psychotherapy do not work without trust, and with the client feeling comfortable to disclose anything.
