If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, anger issues, shame, relationships, addiction problems and more, then you will no doubt find psychotherapy and counselling very helpful. If you are struggling with any of these problems, then I know the isolating pain they can cause, but I have seen depression turn to joy, despair into hope and self-hatred into self-love. It is very important that you feel safe and comfortable and that is why I offer a £25 first session (initial assessment) so you can see if I am right for you

You might be navigating anxiety, grief, trauma, or a life transition that has left you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted. Perhaps you appear to be coping on the outside but feel disconnected, numb, or unsure of how to move forward. You're looking for a safe, supportive space to make sense of your experiences, to feel heard and understood, and to rediscover clarity, confidence, and emotional balance. You want to make changes—but in a way that feels manageable and grounded in your own pace and process.

Hi, I’m Ruth! I experience many clients saying that they don’t believe that their problems are bad enough - there must be others in need who are suffering more, or that it is indulgent to go for counselling. Maybe people around them have questioned if they really need to get help? If you are finding it hard to manage for whatever reason, remember that you deserve to be heard and that your experiences, memories and feelings are real for you. Maybe someone around you is suggesting that you should seek some help and you aren’t sure. Ultimately it is your choice. When any type of mental health or emotional concern affects daily

My personal philosophy in life and within my counselling practice is that the human condition is often very difficult to navigate, and we are the expert in our own world. I offer an environment that is conducive to learning about oneself and how we integrate or negotiate who we are in the world. I have an innate belief that given the right environment ( an environment empathy and non-judgmentalism known as unconditional positive regard) Given this environment I believe enables people to develop that innate capacity to heal, grow and develop to a more authentic, self-nurturing sense of self

Hi I am James and my aim is to help you actually live and enjoy life. I have over twelve years of successful counselling experience. I know its a big step, it takes courage but at certain times in our life we need help. I also use EMDR therapy which is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies. I have worked with clients to change a wide range of difficulties. Such as anxiety, depression, anger, grief, OCD, relationships issues and trauma.

Are you anxious/depressed/stressed/unhappy? Maybe you know the issue and don't want to feel this way any more? Even if you don't exactly know what is wrong, we will work with you to find out the cause so that you can live a happier, more contented life. We aim to get to the root of the problem so that the change is permanent. If you haven't had counselling before, or feel nervous about it, please call me for an informal chat. Counselling can be (and often is) a life changing experience. We suggest a 1st session, by the end of which you will know if you want to carry on. If you are a couple we have a specialist. Feel free to call.

How does therapy work? Therapy cannot change history, but it can help you learn ways to move beyond past experiences to help you live the life you want to live. My job isn’t necessarily to “take the pain away,” but rather to help you navigate and cope with the pain whereby you emerge feeling resilient, confident, and self-sufficient. If you feel lost after a recent break-up, have suffered (or engaged in) an infidelity; if you struggle to connect with your partner; if you are unsure of “what to do next” after a bereavement; if you are enslaved to a substance or a behaviour, then my approach to therapy may be able to help you.

At times life can become too much, you may be struggling and feeling stuck, not knowing which way to turn. You may chose to explore relationships, patterns of behaviour and influences from the past or present. Choices made due to abuse, trauma or any other issues may be holding you back from your true potential. Either way, we can work towards seeking greater understanding of your unique problems in a non-judgemental curious way.

Experiencing and living with anxiety or depression can hugely impact on your quality of life and can be debilitating. There may have been difficult experiences in your life that continue to impact on your now, and have changed the way you see yourself, others and the world. People often struggle with self critical thoughts, or have a lack of confidence in themselves. Anxiety can present in lots of different ways, or begin following life events, like having a baby or starting a new job. Learning to understand what leads to anxiety or low mood, for you individually, and how to make changes to feel better is empowering.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
