Welcome, I'm Dr Charmaine Elliott. I practice therapy that empowers women of all ages, cultures and abilities in the pursuit of a better future. If you're a woman looking for support with low mood (depression), low self-esteem, anxiety, trauma, grief or relationship concerns, you're in the right place. Your problems can be overcome, your opportunities widened and your value better recognised. Therapy with me is criticism-free; containing and caring all the way. You can just be yourself. I believe there's nothing 'wrong' with you, everyone has challenges in life, but you're now in the right place to turn things around for the better.

I work with people of all ages and backgrounds, at different stages of their lives and with different things that they would like to address. Sometimes people come with something specific such as anxiety or a bereavement, following a relationship breakdown or with obsessive compulsive symptoms. Sometimes people come because they are dissatisfied with work, or relationships; friendships, family or intimate relationships. And sometimes people come because they feel stuck or out of sorts, like they want things to be different and they're not sure how, but they want change somehow. Individuals and couples.

Life can be tough sometimes and we can easily find ourselves stuck in cycles of unhelpful thinking or behaving. My aim is to help you to become unstuck and access a healthier, happier version of yourself. You may not know exactly how or why things aren't working, so an initial assessment can help us to figure this out together. I believe that we all possess the knowledge and resources to address our problems - I see my role as helping you to unlock this knowledge, access these skills, and acquire some additional tools along the way.

I provide a non-judgemental space to speak freely about one’s thoughts, conflicts, experiences. My therapeutic approach is psychoanalytic which takes into consideration the unconscious motivations behind and within our life decisions, relationships, thinking patterns and emotional experiences. It works with the challenge of considering that which isn’t known to us, but which often plays a crucial role within the contradictions, ambivalences or repetitions we find ourselves in.

Trauma leaves us feeling broken, in pain and disconnected from our true selves. You may be exhausted by feeling triggered in everyday situations, isolated from friends and family who can’t understand, or struggling to make sense of what happened to you. You may not even remember a time you didn’t feel like this. It is fantastic that you're here now because you’ve decided you deserve more and are ready to feel different. Most of all you’re ready to leave the past in the past, change old patterns that no longer serve you and step into a hopeful future on your own terms.

Many people come to therapy with a sense that something in their life needs to change. For some, the journey from ‘understanding’ to ‘changing’ can be challenging, but possible. For others, the changes that we want are unattainable or overwhelming and so the focus may be on finding ways to live creatively within these limitations that still allows a full life. Accepting ourselves for who we are - perhaps letting go of a requirement to change for others – can be just as powerful. Therapy offers a space where we can take a break from the demands of our regular lives, to slow things down and begin to make some sense of our feelings.

Taking the first step towards therapy can feel like a big one. So, congratulations on making the decision to come here and look for help. I can help you take the next steps towards a better future. You might be coming to therapy for help with a specific problem, such as coping with anxiety or depression or an earlier traumatic experience. Maybe something in your life has changed: a relationship has broken down or you are facing a loss, and you need help to process it and get through this difficult phase. Or you might be feeling lonely or lost yourself, or simply stuck in life, and need help finding where where to go now.

Therapy is a very unique journey, not one person's experience is the same as another's. I offer a gentle and friendly space which allows the co-creation of an environment that can support individual goals. I believe the therapeutic journey is something that we create together. There is not a "one size that fits all" or one method that works for every person. It is important that the therapy is tailored and beneficial to you as an individual. It can be really challenging to even reach out or look for support, I offer a free consultation call with all enquiries, please feel free to drop me an email to organise yours.

These are some of the things people may be thinking or saying when they decide to seek professional support: "I experience awful feelings of panic." "I feel anxious a lot of the time. "I feel tearful a lot." "I can feel angry all day and it feels bad." "Life appears very confusing and complicated" I offer professional counselling, support and strategies to help you navigate your way through whatever your issues may be, already in the first session. I hold a professional psychotherapy diploma from the Human Givens Institute. This approach helped a family member with anxiety very much which is why I chose to train in it also.

I am great at supporting people to grow to be the best, most fully functioning version of themselves. The barrier to this is unique to you. You may have a difficult past, problems in the present or fear about the future. I know you'll need to feel safe to speak about deep feelings and it can take time for this trust to develop. It will help if you are willing to be kind to yourself and to work with me to find a way to say the things that feel most difficult or scary. It can be useful to try to be curious about yourself, to notice and name thoughts and feelings as they arise, I will listen without judgment.

Life is a journey and sometimes you need an empathic psychotherapist to share your struggles and help you to make sense of them. It may be the time for you to switch off the internal critic and take the first step to give yourself permission to bloom. We are all unique individuals and therefore I adapt the therapy to suit you, rather than working in a formulaic way. I like to work in a way that is supported by evidence. I use both psychodynamic and attachment theory, as a basis for understanding, as neuroscience supports such an approach.

Currently working via ZOOM, I am a psychotherapist and counsellor with consulting rooms in Highgate in north London and Harley Street in central London. My approach is integrative. This means that I work with a wide range of psychotherapeutic theories. Each provides its own valuable perspective and is enhanced when carefully integrated with another. The term 'integrative' also refers to the process of integrating the personality, taking disowned aspects of the self and bringing them into awareness, therefore reducing the need for self-defeating defence mechanisms and behaviour.

I have experience working with individuals across a range of presentations such as low mood and depression, anxiety and OCD, gender identity, self-esteem issues, bereavement, phobias, emotional regulation difficulties , autism/ neurodiversity, ADHD, and difficulties with interpersonal relationships.I believe that unprocessed experiences impact on our well-being. Thus, constructive change requires an understanding of how unresolved issues interact with present 'difficulties' which in turn influence our future direction. I am lecturer in Higher Education with NHS experience. I can offer online sessions or FTF at London Bridge.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in London?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
