As a mother of four and a family support worker for many years before qualifying as a counsellor, I have first-hand experience of the challenges of family life and how difficult it can be to navigate. The days can start to feel overwhelming and unmanageable, inducing massive stress and anxiety. Or perhaps the early years were okay, but now the family is mature and you are feeling sad or stuck, with no sense of how to move forward. Therapy gives you the chance to focus on who you are, as well as your relationships with others and the world around you.

Maybe your anxious or depressed and are finding it hard to do the things you used to love, and it's difficult spending time with the people you call family and friends as you currently feel so disconnected from them. Maybe you are feeling extremely sad and broken over a heartbreak, a death of a relative or a different loss such as an identity. Maybe you cannot understand what happened to you in the past but know at some level it has played a part in where you find yourself today. Psychodynamic therapy can help, and I would love in partnership to walk with you on that journey.

Life can be challenging at times. By working together we can come up with new ways of tackling problems you are facing. Research shows that men sometimes feel they don’t have a safe space to talk - I can offer you this. Our first session will be focused on what has brought you to therapy. We will then work together to identify what a successful outcome of therapy looks like for you and we will come up with a plan of how to get there. Evidence shows us that it is not the type of therapy that guarantees the most success but the relationship between client and therapist. In short,it is the relationship

At some time or another, we all need help in dealing with the difficulties that life can bring. Modern, fast-paced living is often overwhelming and so making choices that are beneficial for us becomes more challenging. We often find ourselves taking decisions that move us away from who we truly are and the life we want to lead. Through therapy we can explore what has brought you to where you are now, what is no longer working for you and how to facilitate a shift towards a preferred present and future.

Life can throw us off course, from time to time we can all feel overwhelmed, confused, stuck, frightened or alone. Counselling gives the opportunity to talk through feelings, thoughts and worries in a safe, non-judgmental space. It is not always easy to talk to our family and friends, the therapeutic relationship offers a confidential and consistent space to share and work through the problems we can find difficult to bring up with others.

The world facing our children and young people today is an extremely complicated one. Dealing with an unpredictable, and at times, chaotic environment, can test our mental and physical systems. The seeds of worry can be sown in a myriad of ways but nearly always ends up with the young person internalising their problems, which then manifest in increasingly problematic ways such as OCD, Tics, Self-Harming, and body image issues. Underlying all of these symptoms is a powerfully negative view of themselves which, if unchecked, can become overwhelming.

Are problems impacting on you and your family/ relationships? I am passionate about helping you be the best version of yourself and I truly believe you are worthy of respect, dignity, and the opportunity to improve your life. We all exist in relationships, and at times, these become complicated, harmful for us and create problems that we want to resolve. As a psychotherapist and qualified social worker with 10+ years of experience, I have seen how individuals, couples and families blame each other and themselves for the challenges that exist within these relationships.

I am an integrative psychologist, psychotherapist and sexologist and my training has followed this route because I believe the way we come to understand ourselves develops dynamically in formative years in relationship with our parents, extended families and more broadly the cultures in which families are embedded. In short, we come to know who we are in relationship with other people. That also means that most of our difficulties and adaptive skills - which often cause difficulties later on are formed as we navigate the different demands of these environments too. Becoming aware of these challenge the way to improved mental health.

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
