My approach focuses on the human narrative in the meaning making process. Each human being has a story that matters and no story is less or more important than any other. Understanding our story leads to healthy connection with ourselves and our environment. Without this connection, emotional and physical suffering prevail. Entering into the therapeutic relationship takes courage and commitment because it means exploring unknown territory. It's a journey of self discovery and awareness that can sometimes feel overwhelming. Ultimately though, it is liberating and restorative. Mind, Body and Soul find new balance in co-regulation.

Welcome. I hope my profile information will give you an insight to my work and how I might be of help to you. Are you feeling depressed, anxious, sad, lonely, angry or frustrated? Have you been bereaved or experienced a traumatic event. These are issues which we all deal with in our lives. Perhaps you want to feel more content, feel happier or less stressed. I aim to help people talk about their issues, what they want to change and how they can make those changes to reach their full potential. We all have the ability to be the best we can be; sometimes we just need to be guided and given the tools to help us begin the journey.

I believe the most important relationship we can have is with ourselves, yet so many of us struggle to accept ourselves just as we are. We constantly try to 'fit in' and attach to anyone or anything, just for that connection we so desperately seek, even if such connections do not serve us or meet our needs. Instead we sacrifice our true selves and lose our authenticity along the way. If you are struggling with identity and your own relationship (s) then I can help you reconnect to your authentic self through self-exploration to rediscover the real you and help regain your true sovereignty.

Whether you're embarking on therapy for the first time or taking the next step on your path, I understand that it can be a difficult and daunting experience. However, I want to assure you that I'm here to provide you with the support you need. Life can be challenging at times, and we all need support to manage feelings of stress, anxiety, low mood, depression, or loss, or to work through unresolved issues from our past.

I provide a warm, open, friendly and non-judgemental space to explore issues and concerns in complete confidence. Life can be challenging - it’s really important to look after our emotional and mental wellbeing. Counselling is one way we can do this by learning valuable skills such as self-awareness, communication, coping skills and techniques as well as learning to be a bit kinder and understanding towards ourselves.

I am an NCPS accredited and experienced CBT therapist. I enjoy working with adults but, having spent a long career in post-primary education, I have a particular affinity with young people aged 11 upwards. Concern about the stresses faced by young people and school staff was the motivation to train as a therapist. I have considerable insight into the pressures they face in today’s climate. I believe that, if their issues can be identified and addressed early on, they can be provided with the tools to become their own therapist for the rest of their lives.

Hi My name is Karen, and I am a fully qualified MBACP integrative psychotherapist. I work in Belfast and Dungannon doing face to face as well as online. As an integrative therapist, I have studied a variety of counselling modalities, including CBT, Person Centred, Psychodynamic, I like to know that I am working for you in the best way possible, treating you as an individual. Not all approaches are effective for everyone, so having the background and knowledge allows me to tailor your experience so that you get the most out of our time together.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
