I am a qualified registered counsellor working in the Belfast and Bangor areas. I provide a comfortable and supportive safe space for you to explore any unresolved issues past or present. Whilst we cannot change difficult events from the past, we can work together to better understand and work through the challenges that you are experiencing in your life. Together we can develop an awareness of patterns of negative behavior and perceptions that may be leaving you feeling anxious or depressed. The symptoms of your distress can show in a physical and psychological way.

My experience in psycho-education and therapy has focused on supporting individuals living with stress, mental illness & suicidal thoughts. I've supported people who aren't sure what to do next with situations & relationships, or are struggling with feelings of overwhelm or low mood. Most people who I've worked with just don't want to be in pain anymore, but everyone's needs & wants are different & it's important to get to know you & meet you where you are on your journey.

You might be stuck in the same painful patterns or relationships, feeling drained, doubting yourself, or carrying pain from childhood or past abuse. Maybe you always put others first or struggle to trust. You want to feel safe, set boundaries, rebuild confidence, and finally take back control of your life and relationships.

Summoning the courage to talk to a professional about what is distressing us can be the most difficult, but also the most powerful step towards improving our wellbeing and our lives to a standard that we are more satisfied with and that we deserve. I aim to create a space where the client feels safe, whilst also communicating trust, compassion and understanding so that I may understand what their current experience is truly like for them. I integrate various schools and models of therapy, which I have assessed, are the best intervention for a client in each session and closely monitor their reaction to these.

How do you feel right now? Can you put a word to that feeling? Feelings can often go unchecked and we don't notice until we feel overwhelmed. In modern life we are constantly bombarded with information and feel pressure to make decisions. We anxiously think about the future and regretfully think of the past. Unable to find peace in the now. A therapist can act as a companion who can help you explore your feelings in a safe environment. Help you learn more about yourself. We all have aspects of our personality that we keep hidden from others and even ourselves. Together we can explore these aspects.

My role as your counsellor is to help you explore what is going on in your life, while supporting you to make improvements and find better ways to cope. This might involve examining the messages that have shaped you from childhood, looking at the nature and quality of your relationships and exploring your communication patterns, moods, feelings and life choices. I’m a strong believer that our lives have to have meaning if we are to thrive. Counselling gives you the space to consider how you might begin to make transformative change.

Self-Harming Counsellors
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
