My therapeutic approach can help you take notice of unhelpful relational patterns that feel automatic and cause distress, worry and self doubt. As you progress in therapy, you will feel more able to respond to stressors with greater flexibility and confidence. This frees you up to think and act in a manner that serves your needs better and helps you achieve the sustainable balance you seek.

I've over 15 year's experience working with wide range of issues, including the impact of difficult experiences, situations or behaviors that bring shame, confusion, isolation, or relationship difficulties. These can be hard to talk about, even with loved ones - often leaving people reluctant to seek help and manage alone. I understand how emotions, patterns and behaviours can develop and the role they can come to play. I provide a non-judgmental and accepting space where you don't feel you have to explain or justify your experiences.

I work with adults experiencing grief and loss, identity and life transitions, relationship difficulties, low mood, anxiety, complex trauma and the long shadow of early experiences. My research focuses on understanding what self-care looks like for adults whose early family life was marked by difficulty, emotional distance or growing up before their time. Before retraining, I spent 17 years in education, the last 4 of which were in specialist and clinical settings working at the intersection of education and mental health. This has given me a deep understanding of how adversity, identity and relationships shape our inner lives.

Have you been struggling with how you feel? Maybe it is anxiety, depression, or a general emptiness in life. Would you like to better understand what is driving these feelings? Do you need the opportunity to be listened to, understood, and heard? We rarely get this in our lives, however counselling can provide this. Counselling creates a safe space where you will be able to share with me what is happening in your life. I can offer you a compassionate, attuned, and sensitive relationship where we can bring awareness to the source of these feelings. Through this awareness, understanding and acceptance, change happens.

FAQ - Therapy for Gambling
How do I know if someone has a gambling problem that could benefit from therapy?
A person with gambling disorder is often in denial of their problem. The individual generally gambles increasing amounts of money to achieve the desired excitement. They are restless or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop gambling. This person may have made unsuccessful repeated attempts to control, cut back, or stop gambling. This individual is often preoccupied with thoughts of past gambling, planning the next activity, and how to get the money needed.

What is an effective treatment for gambling?
Cognitive behavioural therapy is used for many conditions and disorders. CBT concentrates on the individual’s thoughts and behaviours. For example, beliefs about the odds of winning are challenged in therapy. In addition, this type of therapy zeroes in on habits and triggers; it also devises coping strategies when triggers arise. CBT can be effective, but the individual must admit they have a problem, and they must have the desire to stop gambling.

How long does therapy take for gambling disorder?
Recovering from gambling disorder takes time and effort. There’s no precise timeline for treatment, but a person can see change if they stick with therapy and if they have the will and desire to stop. Treatment for gambling disorder requires honesty in therapy, a commitment to understanding triggers, as well as the development of coping skills. Making lifestyle changes is also important, such as staying away from lotteries, online gambling, and casinos.

Is relapse a problem for those with a gambling disorder?
Gambling disorder is often chronic and can be life-long; therefore relapse may present a problem for some individuals. But effective treatment can bring a person’s life under control. To remain healthy and on track, the individual may need to regularly check in with their support group or psychotherapist. Frequently refreshing their tools of recovery can be helpful.
