Are you consumed by thoughts about food and weight? Maybe the more you control your eating, the more you binge? You know dieting doesn't work, but you don't know what to do? Maybe you overeat in secret or alone and feel guilty about it? Perhaps you feel like you've tried everything to no avail? Maybe you feel like you're continually sabotaging yourself? I understand how you feel. I struggled with disordered eating for years and at the time didn't know what to do or where to turn for help. I help women overcome their unhealthy relationships with food by addressing the root causes of emotional eating and binge eating.

Adults, children and adolescents all need a space to explore and express their experiences, and for some this tends to be more difficult as they struggle to understand what they're feeling, never mind find the words to describe them to someone. People often find that when they voice their experiences, feelings, and worries, and confide in a professional who can offer support and help them make sense of these, they feel heard, understood, and often a little lighter from sharing the weight of these. I aim to help my clients to feel that little bit lighter.

I am one half of Different Therapy; distinct, individual, diverse - we celebrate the difference in our clients. My passion for counselling comes from a time when I benefited from the support of a wonderful counsellor as I struggled to make sense of situations in my personal life. Childhood family issues have a way of coming back on us as we move through adult life. I will offer you a safe space to explore whatever it is that brings you to counselling. I will meet you where you are now and go with you on your journey. I will help you reach your goals, feel better within yourself and learn to love all of your parts.

Most people hit a point in their lives when they realise that the things they’ve always done to cope aren’t working for them any more. It’s a normal human reaction to a build up of pressure, and we’ve all had a lot of that over the last few years. It may feel like a crisis of sorts and you may or may not know what’s brought it on.

Do you feel overwhelmed, weighed down by feelings of low mood and anxiety? Come talk to me, and together we will work on strategies and tools that will allow you to address the root causes of the difficulties you are experiencing. My favorite thing about counselling is having the privilege to go along with a client on their journey and see them grow and develop as the weeks go on, witness them making the changes they need in order to improve what initially brought them to counselling.

Have you wanted to change things in your life but don't know where to start? Do you have difficulty dealing with your thoughts? Do you feel shame or guilt often? Are you self- critical? I work with people to support and empower them to understand what's going on for them, identifying what may help them to enjoy life again. For some that may be gaining self-confidence, feeling less stressed/anxious/stuck or simply better sleep . Counselling can feel scary but can be the first important step in investing in yourself. I will move at your pace, offering a non-judgemental, calm, kind space for you to explore what's challenging you.

Clients I work most successfully with have a desire to sort out relationship(s), present or past. They will be open to discover their own needs, issues and aspirations and to own these and, if a present relationship, to enter into mutual understanding of what each can bring to and gain from that relationship. They will find the possibilities of change from attitudes and thought patterns created by or brought into the relationship. Other clients will bring an openness to discover why and how their issues, grief, fear, loneliness, low self worth or anxiety/depression have formed and engage in the journey to wholeness.

Summoning the courage to talk to a professional about what is distressing us can be the most difficult, but also the most powerful step towards improving our wellbeing and our lives to a standard that we are more satisfied with and that we deserve. I aim to create a space where the client feels safe, whilst also communicating trust, compassion and understanding so that I may understand what their current experience is truly like for them. I integrate various schools and models of therapy, which I have assessed, are the best intervention for a client in each session and closely monitor their reaction to these.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
