I work with adults only across a range of issues including: suicide ideation, self-harm, depression, attachment style, grief, low self-esteem, sexual orientation, anxiety, anger, survivors of abuse/sexual abuse and trauma.
A fully registered member of BACP, I use an integrated approach in my client work. Using a person-centered, psychodynamic and humanistic style to keep the client at the centre of all my work, I hope to create a safe space where my clients can feel at ease to work through whatever they need to at their own pace. I am also a fully qualified EFT practitioner (Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as 'tapping') and am able to offer this technique in my client work, along with mindfulness and meditation. Sometimes we need to access more tools, helping my clients find the best fit for them can create lasting change.

After having taught for seven years at the Faculty of Psychology of an Italian private university, I moved to Northern Ireland where I founded Aletes Mental Health, which I now direct as the CEO. I am a Fellow of the National Council of Integrative Psychotherapists (UK) where I served as an Ethics Committee Member and currently offer Clinical Supervision. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I transitioned my business online, accessing the global market where I still work treating adults, couples, and families from any country in the world. I was trained to provide therapy in English to speakers of other languages.

Hello, I'm Sarah. I have 18yrs of experience within a variety of settings, NHS, Universities, FE colleges and workplace providers including specialised occupational groups-emergency services and armed forces. I believe that in therapy 'not one size fits all' and so I have made it my focus to continue to learn and develop my practice. My qualification and experience in the facilitation of reflexive supervision, both in groups and individual, can be of benefit to supervisees that request cross-professional supervisory support, and I offer timely group support in the aftermath of a critical incident.

Acknowledging that something doesn't feel quite right and that we may need help and support can be very challenging for us to accept. In a world where anxiety, stress and depression seem all consuming, it can be hard to see a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. That's where exploring your difficulties with a trained professional can help. Working together as a team, we will work collaboratively to help you reach your goals in therapy and equip you with the tools to become your own therapist.

I have experience of working with depression, relationship issues, anxiety and bereavement, as well as working with suicidal thoughts and self harm.
If you are in the process of considering counselling/psychotherapy then finding the right therapist is the most important decision to make. Research shows positive therapeutic outcomes are based on the relationship between therapist and client. A good way of assessing if we can work well together is attending a free of charge session; no commitment beyond this, to see if I can help you to identify further what your needs are.

My experience in psycho-education and counselling has focused on supporting individuals living with stress, mental illness & suicidal thoughts. I've supported people who aren't sure what to do next with situations & relationships, or are struggling with feelings of overwhelm or depression. Most people who I've worked with just don't want to be in pain anymore, but everyone's needs & wants are different & it's important to get to know you & meet you where you are on your journey.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
