As a Person Centred Therapist with training in CBT, Emotion Focused Therapy, and Critical Incident Stress Management, I believe I can tailor support to suite your needs.
Life can challenge us in every way both imaginable or unimaginable. We can often feel swept along or that certain situations are steering us rather than the other way around. When we feel that life is passing us by or that it is happening to us without our input, therapy is a worthwhile investment in you. Counselling can help us to manage these life experiences in a way that will empower you to take control back. Considering counselling can be daunting and I am here to make this process as comfortable as possible for you as you begin to assert control over areas of challenge in your life.

I established MANN uP in 2017.
There are times in everyone’s life when you can feel or begin to recognise that you may not be living your life to your own personal potential. It might be something that happened in your past is still unresolved. You may feel like your life is out of balance, and is not functioning as you would like it to in the 'now'. You may be unsure about how to move forward into your future. You may be navigating a life landmark such as ending a relationship or processing a bereavement. You may lack belief in your own brilliance leading to low self-esteem. You may be struggling to handle intense emotions and/or unhelpful behaviour patterns.

My name is Seán, and I am qualified counsellor currently registered with BACP. As I currently work in the charity sector, I have extensive experience working with a very broad spectrum of clients, of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, sexualities, and gender expressions. As a result of this, I have sought additional training on many topics, such as domestic violence, trauma, and the LGBTQ+ experience in Northern Ireland. Additionally, in my recent education at Ulster University, I undertook some research into social anxiety, giving me a more specialist knowledge of that topic.

I'm passionate about helping adults who have experienced difficult pasts, in particular childhood trauma and neglect, to better manage the strong emotions, thoughts and behaviours that are holding them back from living a fulfilling life.
Do you struggle with being hijacked by strong and seemingly irrational emotions? Do you feel detached, or dissociated from the reality around you, preventing you from living life? You may have experienced a difficult and traumatic past leading you to question your self-worth, lack trust in others, and feel overwhelmed when you lack control, or when others get too close, too needy, or are critical. If this sounds like you then maybe we can work together to help you achieve greater emotional control, develop self-compassion and the capacity to better trust yourself and others.

Do you feel depressed, overwhelmed, anxious or stuck regarding how things change? I love working with people and offering space, expertise and empathy to find clarity in a moment when everything seems out of control or overwhelming. At your pace, we explore how you currently feel and begin to understand and make sense of your current experience. With knowledge of your past & in becoming aware of how current thoughts, emotions and behaviour interact and how difficulties are maintained, we'll uncover what needs to change. I then hope to empower and give you the confidence and method to make these changes.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
