One of the most important aspects of CBT is its use of a collaborative relationship within which we work together to identify and challenge the thoughts which have brought you to therapy.
I am a BABCP accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist with experience providing psychological assessment and support to children, adolescents, and adults. CBT aims to provide a reflective model within which we can develop a deeper insight to our experiences and emotions, and to understand the impact of these on our daily lives. Often times, struggles such as anxiety or depression are a maintained by thoughts which have become stuck in negative cycles. CBT helps to identify these negative thought patterns and to challenge them, helping to highlight new perspectives and reduce the negative impact.

I am an Integrative Therapist, which means I use a variety of approaches and techniques (including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), to tailor my practice to individual clients, as I do not believe that 'one size fits all' when it comes to emotional wellbeing.
I offer a very private, comfortable and relaxed space, where you can have a safe place to talk through your challenges and learn new coping strategies, which can enable you to work through the feelings that are troubling you. This can help to deal with specific problems, cope with a crisis or bereavement, improve your relationships, reduce confusion, or develop better ways of living. My role is to listen, support and help you understand your feelings and behaviour better. whatever difficulties you are facing.

In addition to CBT , I also offer EMDR which is an effective, comprehensive and integrative therapy that works to reprocess disturbing life experiences that continue to impact negatively on life using bilateral stimulation, allowing memories to be reprocessed, effective for PTSD, Phobias, fears, OCD and anxiety disorders.
CBT is a talking therapy based on the theory that thoughts, feelings, what we do and how our body feels are all connected. If we change on of these we can alter the others. When people feel worried or distressed we often fall into patterns of thinking and responding that can worsen how we feel. CBT works to help us notice and change problematic thinking styles or behaviour patterns. CBT has lots of strategies that can help you in the here and now. CBT has good evidence for a wide range of mental health problems and is a recommended therapy for Anxiety Disorders, panic, PTSD, OCD, Social Anxiety and Phobias, Anger & sleep problems.

Whilst my therapeutic approach mainly falls within the realms of CBT and associated 'Third Wave' approaches, I cherish the fact that first and foremost you may simply be looking someone to sit down and discuss your problems with at this stage.
Hello. Thank you for taking the time to read what it is that I may have to offer you. As you will likely know, we tend to seek out therapy at those times in our life when we are experiencing some form of distress. What that distress may look like will vary between individuals, and how people may name or label that distress will also vary considerably. What I can offer is first and foremost the opportunity to be with another human being during this time of distress. During this time, together we will seek to better understand your current difficulties - your fears and hopes, your disappointments and pain, your losses and hurts.

CBT looks at how thoughts impact on our feelings and behaviours and how this cycle is maintained.
Acknowledging that something doesn't feel quite right and that we may need help and support can be very challenging for us to accept. In a world where anxiety, stress and depression seem all consuming, it can be hard to see a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. That's where exploring your difficulties with a trained professional can help. Working together as a team, we will work collaboratively to help you reach your goals in therapy and equip you with the tools to become your own therapist.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophising or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
