Many clients find their way to me following difficulty with symptoms associated with depression, low self-esteem and/or with features of anxiety (in its varying clinical forms.) They frequently report reaching a point where day to day life feels a struggle; offers little sense of purpose/direction with limited experiences of satisfaction or joy. By developing a shared understanding of their problem, including the elements that have served to maintain the clients problem until now - we can be better informed as to what changes are needed (cognitively & behaviorally) to improve symptoms and renew their sense of coping.

Life today seems to be overloaded by a variety of stress in many spheres of existence. What should be enjoyable and fulfilling sometimes turns out to be the very cause of suffering. In the midst of the busy-ness of life, we do not take the time to address this suffering and instead criticise and blame ourselves or others. This could potentially leave us feeling confused and ashamed. Shame does not heal the pain of suffering. Every human being has a need to be understood, accepted and validated because the human brain is wired to love and be loved.

If you are someone who is experiencing anxiety which is starting to negatively impact on your life or has done for many years then please do get in touch. It might be struggling to leave the house, having intrusive, unwanted thoughts or images, having to engage in behaviours such as frequent checking, washing or repeating. Often people can feel embarrassed talking about their anxieties or the unwanted behaviours they feel urged to undertake. I hope my years of experience using evidence based approaches with anxiety should help you feel able to discuss and face these anxieties head on, allowing you to lead a healthier, happier life.

Most people experience anxiety to some degree and it can actually be useful to keep us motivated. However, if anxiety becomes overwhelming and interferes with our day-to-day lives, it can be worth exploring why this is happening and look for ways to manage things. Sometimes an uncomfortable issue arises and maybe we don't react in the way we would have expected, leaving us questioning prior beliefs about who we are. These are just 2 examples of possible reasons we might seek counselling but it could be anything at all where talking to someone unrelated to our day-to-day lives in confidence and without judgement will help.

I predominantly use a narrative therapy approach but as a clinical psychologist I am able to draw on a number of different psychological therapies including ACT, CFT and CBT.
Deciding to start therapy with a new therapist can be a daunting prospect. I think that it is important to spend time developing a safe and genuine therapeutic relationship to build understanding about the problem and think together about ways to process this and to move forward. I support people with anxiety, low mood, identity or adjustment issues related to their physical health condition or life experiences and the impact that this has on different areas of their lives. I provide a space to think through these issues together and come up with joint approaches and different ways of thinking.

I tend to use a ‘narrative approach’ to help families/couples think and talk about their difficulties.
Hello, I am Joanne. I have been a family therapist in the NHS for over 20yrs. I have recently retired from working with young people and their families in Camhs and now I am offering family therapy privately. I have also worked as a family therapist in Adult Psychological Services. Narrative Counsellors

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
