Hello, my name is Matthew and I’m a counsellor based at Havant Meeting Place - Havant United Reformed Church. I acknowledge counselling is a brave step to take with initially making the enquiry and then having the courage to attend the first session. I have had counselling in my life and being listened to seemed surreal at first. Friends and family had always given their opinions and reassurances, with the best of intentions at heart, yet being really listened to was ground-breaking for me. I aim to ease any anxiety by arranging an appointment as soon as possible so therapy can begin.
My approach is Humanistic, I have the philosophy of listening, acceptance and remaining non-judgmental. In practice this means that I listen to the issues you wish to discuss, accept you for who you are and never judge you or your actions. We all have the ability to achieve our goals, over come issues and boost our self-esteem and overall grow in self-worth.
Therapy gave me the space to explore thoughts and feelings and make sense of them in my own mind. I learnt to speak from the heart, instead of the hurt, and started to feel free, to trust the choices I made and ultimately, become comfortable with who I was. I decided to choose counselling as my vocation offering an opportunity for others to benefit as I had.
