Hi. I am Gordon, a qualified Arts Psychotherapist. I worked for thirty years in construction, office, and schools-based work before training as a therapist; having found therapy and counselling to be helpful to my own experiences. I enjoy sharing the benefit of arts-based therapy with others who feel in need of a bit of help. Dyslexic myself, my experience is that neurodiversity has many facets; stimulating anxieties and creating blockages that cannot easily be put into words. Art Therapy is a distinct approach to Psychotherapy that uses a mix of art materials as self-expression and communication tools.

Hi I'm Lindsay and I specialise in working with Anxiety and low self-esteem. I am a qualified Integrative Therapist. I work with many issues but specialise in improving confidence and mood, and lowering anxiety & stress. I realised how effective CBT was in working with Anxiety & Low Self-Esteem very early in my career in my very first placement! I trained further and view CBT as a major strategy in my model, along with Assertivness Training and Counselling. Prior to establishing my own business I was an associate at Sheffield CBT Practice and Cornerstone Therapy Centre, both well-established practices in Sheffield.

Have you always felt like you never quite fitted in and life has always been a bit of a struggle for you? It may be that you have felt misunderstood or that other people simply do not 'get' you. Everyday life may have always felt challenging, but the increased demands of adult life have been overwhelming and exhausting. You may worry a lot about tasks or relationships. You may also find that you have differences that are areas of significant strength for you, for example an ability to be creative, to hyper-focus and attend to detail. Would you like to discover if Autism or ADHD form a part of your identity?

Supporting a person towards improving their quality of life has always been at the heart of my therapeutic practice. When we are anxious, depressed, or when we're going through changes in our lives, we can find that we are not living the way we would like. Finding our way through this can sometimes be too difficult on our own. Your therapeutic experience will involve coming to an understanding of the connections between the past and present and developing a commitment to change where necessary.

Hi my work with children and young people has enabled me to adopt a common sense approach. I practise Integrative Counselling, that means I use CBT, Person Centred, Pyschodynamic, etc, concepts. Which are the building blocks of thoughts and beliefs which affect how we feel. I understand the first step in seeking counselling is hard, if you have sought support, you may not know how to effect change it’s at this point we explore choices.

I seek to offer you a safe, confidential space where you can share your story. Whilst I have worked with a number of difficulties, these tend to have a common, but individually unique grounding - how we as humans have learnt to survive and cope in difficult circumstances, and together in therapy we can start to make sense of how your experiences and relationships have shaped you in order to develop a road map for repairing relationships, overcoming difficulties, being kinder to yourself and developing new ways of coping in order to live a better and more fulfilling life.

Welcome! . Life can be hard and challenging sometimes. The uncertain times we live give arise to anxiety, fear and often confusion. It might help to talk to explore your inner landscape and be supported in your understanding and choices that might be open to you. It takes courage sometimes to live life- change always take great courage. Psychotherapy is a collaborative journey where I help you into a different, perhaps more satisfying relationship with yourself. You might want to set goals, heal past hurts, find new ways of dealing the past and prepare for a different future.

I welcome hearing from all new clients, but I have particular experience in bereavement, sexual abuse and pregnancy, birth, early parenthood (sometimes called the perinatal period) and baby loss. Has something happened to you that you feel like you should be able to cope with, but find yourself stuck, not able to move on, feeling frustrated or ashamed by your response? Perhaps that's because you've not had a space in which you can say the things you need to say to someone who is not connected with what happened. I will welcome how you really feel with warmth, respect and compassion and we will collaborate on how things might change

Hi, I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, CAT Therapist and EMDR Practitioner. I specialise in working with both adults and children/young people and offer an approach focusing upon what’s most helpful to my clients. Life can bring up a number of adverse life events which can be overwhelming and we require support to process emotions/experiences or understand what’s going on. We also sometimes need guidance to help make the changes we desire because we can get stuck in negative patterns. I work collaboratively with clients to assess their needs and tailor therapy to meet these needs. I can help with a wide range of difficulties.

Clients coming to see me have usually lost confidence in themselves-some have never had it. They want to feel more positive about their current situation and have a hopeful outlook for the future. Low mood and anxiety can arise for many reasons-sometimes we need to go back into earlier experiences to find out the cause. For others there has been a significant loss-of employment-or the death of a person close to them. All these things trigger a sense of insecurity and struggling to manage we can develop unhelpful behaviours -maybe we drink or eat too much or hurt ourselves in other ways. Counselling helps us find healthier options

Hi, I'm Charlotte and I am a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist working within the NHS and in private practice. As a Psychologist, I offer a person-centred approach to individuals who may be looking for support with anxiety, low mood, trauma, relationship difficulties and so on. We begin by engaging in a period of assessment, coming to a shared understanding of your difficulties, and deciding how best to support you to move forward in a longlasting way that continues after therapy.

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
