I have trained in existential psychotherapy, and I apply this in my work with clients. The starting point is the experience of the client, to provide the opportunity for them to examine their understanding of life, and the problems and dilemmas they face; to reassess their goals and desires. It provides an opportunity to consider how their choices have been constrained, perhaps by the views and expectations of others, but also by constraints rooted in our society. Understanding can lead to questioning, and growth, possibly in new directions.
I have worked with people of all ages, and clients dealing for a range of concerns, including bereavement, anxiety, self-esteem, and identity issues. I have substantial experience working with teenagers and young adults, including those with learning difficulties.
We would not approach therapy with any preconceptions or psychological models into which you might ‘fit’. Rather, we work outwards from your experience and understanding to broaden and clarify the choices that you can make in your life. ‘it is not the understanding that follows technique, but the technique that follows understanding’.
