Life is constantly changing. We all encounter highs and lows, coping, learning, recovering, and finding joy along the way. Yet, there are moments when you might feel more anxious, sad, and isolated than ever before. You may be here due to struggling with a bereavement, relationship issues, stress at work, or a life transition and you have noticed how it is impacting your day-to-day life and those around you. You may be grieving the loss of your animal. These difficulties may be hard for you to manage and you could be feeling alone, lost, and struggling to navigate all the emotions you may be feeling.

When we experience difficult life events we develop ways of coping and finding a way forward. Later in life, this can result in behaviours and emotions that are no longer serving us. This might present as difficulties such as depression, anxiety, eating difficulties or substance use, but you may simply feel 'stuck' or unsatisfied with life. It is likely that in our work together we will need to talk about your past experiences and important relationships, and explore patterns of behaviour and relating to others and yourself in the here and now, to consider what has brought you to this point and how to create meaningful change.

I believe that talking therapies are very valuable for normal life stressors, such as worries and anxieties, additionally to mental health problems/disorders, e.g. ADHD, OCD, Autism and Anxiety and Eating Disorders. I offer psychological therapies to the general public, who might also have personal, work or educational pressures, which might be overwhelming and require relieve. My mental health service attempts to improve not only the quality in their private life but potentially the performance at work or in an educational setting. Whilst identifying the issue with the client and exploring the options, problem resolution can occur.

Empowering men to navigate life's challenges with confidence and clarity. Talking Spaces is an accessible counselling specialist service for men’s mental health, available in person or via Zoom. Generally men by nature are more action focused, so when it comes to managing difficult life events and emotions I use action and solution based therapeutic approaches and interventions when working with men’s mental health issues. Men need a service with the knowledge understand that social and cultural norms and ingrained beliefs about masculinity are one of the main barriers to seeking counselling in the first place.

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
