About
Let me start by saying I’ve been to see a psychologist; why mention this? Two reasons: firstly, people often ask me this, so I’ll be up front about it. Secondly – maybe why people ask – having been “on the other side of the room”, I have the experience of how hard opening up can be, and how difficult it is to think about “life”. This experience has meant that back on the psych side of the room, I take a genuinely careful and non-judgmental approach to sessions. I begin by focusing on helping people feel comfortable; paradoxically perhaps, this means we are able to get to work on things quite quickly, but importantly, never rushing.
My experience of being the client/patient/whatever word you like to use, and having worked some things through, means that I build good empathic connections with people. Empathic connection, the literature, and real humans will tell you, is THE most important factor in therapy: more important than the model used, the time taken or any other factor measured.
Speaking of the model used, I use Person-Centred foundations, with some psychodynamic methods and CBT exercises to further enhance our work; all dependent on what is happening in our sessions. What any of that previous sentence means is something you may know, might look up, or can ask: I always begin with a free 30 minute Zoom, so people can ask questions.
